TECHNOLOGY LEADER SUN MICROSYSTEMS INKS NEW MOU WITH ITE
Lim Xin Ying, a second-year Higher Nitec in Info-Communication Technology student from ITE College East had the opportunity to pick up the latest in computing technology during her training in ITE - thanks to a MOU between ITE and Sun Microsystems signed in 2004 - which led, not only to the setting up of the ITE-Sun Engineering IT Solutions Centre at ITE College East, but also the development of Joint Certificate Elective Modules by ITE and Sun Microsystems.
2 “The elective modules I took - Essentials in Sun Java and Mobile Applications Development with Java ME – are the latest in programming in the industry. The knowledge and skills I gained, plus the additional Joint Certificates I received will put me in good stead when I join the industry,” said 20-year-old Xin Ying.
3 Second-year Higher Nitec student in Info-Communication Technology, Ng Zhi Ming, 17, who was on a two-month internship at Sun Microsystems said, “The internship at Sun Microsystems was a chance of a lifetime for me. I learned about container management and server virtualization. I underwent a course in Solaris Technology to prepare for the internship. Being part of the team which meets the demands of Sun ’ s work environment was for me, a great exposure! The knowledge gained and the skills acquired will definitely come in handy when I start work.”
4 To explore new areas in collaboration and meet demand for sought-after skills in programming, Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and Sun Microsystems Private Limited, will ink a second Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to stamp their commitment to work closely for the next five years. Like Xin Ying and Zhi Ming, many ITE students and staff will benefit from this second MOU.
5 Said Mr Bruce Poh Geok Huat, Director and CEO of ITE, “Between March 2005 and September 2006, some 1300 ITE students have successfully completed at least one of the 3 Joint-Certificate Elective Modules - Essentials of Sun Java, Mobile Applications with Java ME and Programming with Sun Java. Our lecturers from the School of ICT have also benefited from the MOU through joint development work with staff of Sun Microsystems.”
6 With the signing of the second MOU, Mr Bruce Poh looks forward to building on the synergistic collaboration between ITE and Sun Microsystems. “ Besides benefiting from Sun ’ s technologies through the elective courses and the jointly-developed certifications, the new MOU will also include joint development of commercial projects and technologies for overseas markets, thereby extending the Centre of Technology ’ s (COT) activities to the region,” added Mr Poh.
7 "Sun believes in working closely with various institutions of learning to equip students with advanced skills, hands-on experience with leading-edge, open source technologies, and the confidence to create new technologies," said Mr Ong Chee Beng, Managing Director, Singapore, Sun Microsystems. "I am confident that the collaboration with ITE will grow from strength to strength and provide an excellent platform to nurture the next generation of infocomm students with market relevant skills to address the growing needs of today's robust economy."
