Construction of first ITE Regional Campus at Simei Avenue well underway

Since our last report on the Ground-breaking Ceremony for the first ITE Regional Campus in the August/September issue, much had been happening at the Simei Avenue site directly opposite the Singapore Expo. Five levels of the building had risen amid the flurry of activities, and more developments could be expected in months ahead. The Quality Workforce went behind the scenes and found out that the project development has been progressing well.

The main building contractor for this mega campus is M/s Kajima Overseas Asia Pte Ltd. Backed by a team of more than 50 sub-contractors, who are responsible for the architectural, landscape and interior works, civil and structural and mechanical and electrical engineering (M&E) works, Kajima faces the dauntless task of ensuring that its construction schedule is closely adhered to.

The Progress So Far
Mr Sugimoto Koji, Project Manager of Kajima, is confident of delivering the works on time, to enable the campus to open its doors to the first student intake of 7,200 full-time and 8,100 part-time students in January 2005. “We have 600 workers working on 14-hour workdays to put the project together. There will be an estimated 900 workers when construction is at its peak.”

Superstructure works up to the fifth storey for the three main blocks housing the Administration and Convention Centre, Laboratories, Workshops and Lecture Theatrettes, and up to third storey for the Sports Centre, have been completed. According to Kajima, all superstructure works are scheduled to complete by end September 2003.

The building works have proceeded according to schedule. “The close cooperation, commitment and dedication rendered by the ITE project team, consultants and contractors help ensure that key targets of the project are met,” added Mr Koji.

Summing up the overall development progress, a satisfied Mr Koji said that the team is confident of delivering the project on time, within budget and with ensured quality.
