ITE’s NDP Motivators Get the Padang Crowd Dancing!

by Carrie Soh

“COME on everyone! Take out your tambourines and shake them hard!” Farhana Irwan Shah, first-year Nitec in Info-Communications Technology student from ITE College East, screamed with gusto. All charged-up and high on happiness, Farhana was working really hard to rouse her audience out of inertia, and to create a fun and celebratory mood inherent in every National Day Parade (NDP).

Farhana was not alone. She was joined by some 350 ITE students and, together, they had been practising tirelessly for the past five months just to perfect their roles as NDP motivators. Judging by the excited and elated response from the crowd, their efforts have certainly not gone wasted.

This was not the first time ITE students were roped in as motivators. ITE had been a participant since 2000.

A Year of Many ‘Firsts’…
“But what is so different,” revealed Mr Raymond Ong, Course Manager, Physical Education & CCA, ITE College East, “is that this year’s NDP marks several ‘firsts’ for us. It is the first time the entire team of NDP Motivators is made up of ITE students It is the first time students have to undergo auditions to be selected as motivators. It is also the first time that the motivators performed a dance item for the audience.”

We are Singapore, Singaporeans…
It was the desire to want to do something for Singapore on her birthday that prompted, Nitec in Multimedia Technology student, Nur Ain bte Mohd Padik and her group of friends from ITE College East, to audition for NDP Motivators. “We want to be a part of the NDP and experience what it is like to be at the parade on the actual day,” she explained.

While training was arduous, with many ‘burnt’ weekends, the experience had been worth the while. Raved Hairulbariah bte Johari, Nitec in Service Skills (Office) student from ITE College West (Clementi Campus): “No words could describe our joy when we saw the audience enjoying themselves and even cheering us on during our performance.”

Abdul Majeed, a Nitec in Chemical Process Technology student from ITE College West (Bukit Batok Campus), shared: “It wasn’t just about fun, it was also about bringing out the Singaporean within us – a very proud Singaporean.”

With so much fun and learning involved, it was no wonder that the motivators were all for returning to next year’s NDP. Crystal Yeo, Nitec in Communications Technology student from ITE College Central (Yishun Campus), aptly summed up: “The parade experince is truly unforgettable. Count on us Singapore. We’d definitely be back to celebrate your birthday again next year!”
