New Training Facility at Yishun Campus
a Boon to Automotive Students

by Liang Hwee Ming

RABI Shahir bin Shaik Ismail, 18, is looking forward to lessons being conducted at the Transmission and Driveline Training Facility at ITE College Central (Yishun Campus).

He will soon be able to do so, thanks to a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between ITE and ZF South East Asia recently.

Under this MOU, ZF South East Asia will establish a new Transmission and Driveline Training Facility at the Automotive Technology Department of the Yishun Campus. With this new facility, ITE students would benefit from learning about the latest technology found in automatic transmissions and driveline systems. Some 100 Automotive Technology students are expected to benefit from this new facility per year.

Training Highly-Specialised Students
Said Rabi, a second-year Nitec in Automotive Technology (Heavy Vehicles) student: “I like the practical, hands-on training given by my campus. And now, I get to further strengthen my technical foundation, with the help of ZF South East Asia. By working in this new facility, I know I’ll be trained in the latest equipment used by industry. This would give me a headstart when I join the workforce.” Rabi hopes to start his own automotive business one day.

Added Mr Sangaran Gopal, Section Head/Automotive Technology of ITE College Central (Yishun Campus): “With this new facility, we would also be able to start a new elective course related to automatic transmission. This will allow interested students to become highly specialised in this area, which is an important area for automotive technicians to master.”

The MOU signing is especially significant for ZF South East Asia as this is the first time the company is setting up a training facility with an educational institution in South East Asia.
Said Mr F.X Laubscher, President of ZF South East Asia Pte Ltd: “We are pleased to work with an educational institution like ITE. As an organisation, we believe in giving back to society what we have earned, and this partnership with ITE allows us to do that. We also hope that ITE students would, in the process of learning, become familiar with ZF products and services.”

As part of the collaboration, ZF South East Asia would train ITE staff on the use of the equipment. The company will also provide industrial attachment places for ITE’s staff and students from the Automotive Technology Department.

The MOU was signed by Mr Laubscher and Mr Yek Tiew Ming, Principal of ITE College Central.
