ITE made a clean sweep at the recent 2005 Mitutoyo Metrology Competition in the Basic Category where its students clinched all three awards. Mohd Haider Shah and Toh You Hao, Nitec in Precision Engineering students from ITE College West (Balestier Campus) won the First and Second Prizes respectively, while Goh Chin How, Higher Nitec in Mechanical Engineering student from ITE College East, took the Third Prize. Yet another student, Gerald Lim from ITE College West (Balestier Campus) came in third in the Advance Category. The icing on the cake was the Challenge Trophy, which ITE got to keep for a year.

Winning was no sheer coincidence. Two months prior to the Competition, Mohd Haider, You Hao, Gerald and Bing Chen met up with their Lecturer, Mr How Kok Sin everyday for four to five hours to prepare for the competition.

Levelling Up Knowledge to Win
Mr How, Lecturer/Precision Engineering, ITE College West (Balestier Campus), recalled: “Our students competed with Diploma students. The biggest challenge was to bring their knowledge and skills on par with the other participants. To help them read up, I provided them with materials and Internet links. We spent time together going through the materials, doing mock-up tests and practising hard. I’d say the students did well at the Competition because they were very motivated.”

Mohd Haider quipped: “Mr How and some of the other lecturers had been most encouraging. Competing against more mature Polytechnic students had added that bit of pressure. I’d like to thank Mr How, Mr Tan Hock Chuan, and Mdm Kwang Siew Hong for spending a lot of time with us during our preparations. Not forgetting too, our Course Manager, Mr Vincent Tang for the moral support.”

Both You Hao and Gerald agreed that their knowledge of Metrology has deepened, and their skills of using measuring equipment improved. The win was a pleasant surprise for Chin How who had just started his Higher Nitec in Mechanical Engineering course only a few weeks before the competition.

The annual Competition has been around since 2003, and ITE has been putting up a good showing consistently. The Competition is open to ITE and Polytechnic full-time students. For the Basic Category, participants have to take measurements of a part/component using common measurement instruments. For the Advance Category, participants have to perform measurements using a specialised equipment known as a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM).
