SNG YEW CHONG GOLD MEDAL WINNER
by Liang Hwee Ming

A dogged determination and a strong sense to persevere when the going gets tough...these are NICHOLAS TAN GUAN HONG’s strengths. Be it in his studies, karate classes or micromouse competitions, Nicholas, 19, has demonstrated that he has what it takes to succeed, thanks to his “never-give-up” attitude.

The Nitec in Mechatronics graduate from ITE College Central (MacPherson Campus) related: “I studied hard and never gave up. Whenever I came across difficult test questions, I would persist in solving them.”

Nicholas applied the same determination in his preparation for Micromouse competitions.
As Chairman of the Micromouse and Robotics Club, he spent long hours coaching his club members in programming, and preparing them for micromouse competitions.

“There were tense moments during competitions. Sometimes, the mouse might just fail you despite your efforts,” recalled Nicholas. Happily for Nicholas, he had his fair share of successes and led his team to victory during the National Inter-School Micromouse Competition 2003.
It was also in ITE that Nicholas’ interest in karate grew. The black belt holder, who was also the Chairman of the campus’ Karate Club, had led his Club members at various karate competitions at the national level.

Nicholas is currently doing a Diploma in Mechatronics course at Temasek Polytechnic.

TAY ENG SOON GOLD MEDAL WINNER
by Yong Tsuey Ling

When told of the Tay Eng Soon Gold Medal she has won, NORHAYATI BTE ZAKARIA was almost moved to tears. For, the 38-year-old mother of two could not have asked for more. She has, after all, had her wish fulfilled, thanks to ITE.

Chanced upon the calling of a lifetime while she was hospitalised some years back, Norhayati had wished she could be a Nurse, touched as she was by the care she was given. Lacking the conviction then, she nursed her yearning for two years. Norhayati finally let her husband in on the “secret” and plucked up her courage to walk out of a 10-year banking career.

And so begun her journey to establish her Nursing credentials. She first signed up for a short healthcare course before going on to do a stint at KK Women’s & Children’s Hospital. Next, she applied for Nitec in Nursing, and managed to get in. Age notwithstanding, Norhayati excelled at ITE. When she graduated, she was among the top of her cohort. Attaining the highest Grade Point Average of 4.0, she scored straight As, with awards to boot. The likes of the Lembaga Biasiswa Kenangan Maulud Academic Excellence Award 2004, Mendaki Award, Top Achievement Award and ITE Course Medal completed her ITE accomplishment.

“Much of what I’ve gained at ITE, I owed to my Nursing Lecturers, Mdm Nancy Chua, Mdm Phua Mui Liang and Mdm Wong Lai Fun. If not for them, I might not have had my wish fulfilled. They had so much faith in me,” said she. Norhayati has since found employment as an Enrolled Nurse at Singapore General Hospital.

LEE KUAN YEW GOLD MEDAL WINNER
by Mohd Jailani Nathan

Few people knew that HANSEL KOH ZHI REN, 19, had to sacrifice his dream of playing music in Bangkok, Thailand so that he could attend this year’s ITE Graduation Ceremony.

The Nitec in Info-Communications Technology graduate from ITE College Central (MacPherson Campus), who plays the clarinet, beamed: “Because getting an Award as prestigious as the Lee Kuan Yew Gold Medal is no chance occurrence...” His love for the classical overtures sets him distinctively apart from the hip-hop generation of today.

Like his love for classical music, Hansel’s penchant for computer programming and “techie gadgets and stuff” has also placed him in a different league. The IT whiz showed his ingenuity and innovative streak when he took the monotony out of chess-playing, turning it into an exciting, new gaming experience on the go. Thanks to a special programme he created, mobile phone users from every corner of the world can engage in a virtual multi-player game of Chinese chess on the phone, simply by a few clicks on the keypad.

Hansel elaborated: “Riding on SMS technology, my creation allows players to transmit co-ordinates to their opponents. The programme then translates these into graphical moves on screen.” Hansel’s creation had garnered substantial interest at the Asia-Pacific InfoComm Technology Convention in Hong Kong last year,

The first-year Diploma in Digital Entertainment Technology student at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, who scored straight As throughout his two years of studies at ITE, attributed his success to his lecturers and parents. “My parents usually leave me to make my own decision and that, in a way, has given me a better sense of control and self-reliance,” added Hansel. And that attribute would certainly see Hansel through his ambition – to be at the helm of his very own one-stop IT solution company.
