ITE Graduation Ceremony 2006
All Ready in a Globalised World

by Mohd Jailani Nathan

When he last spent time in Kerala, India, Darin Cheong had his hands full – working laboriously with his expedition mates on assembling a computer laboratory in a high school, and once that was done, he gave lessons on Microsoft programmes to a group of teachers and students. Meanwhile, in Victoria, Australia, another Singaporean student, Richard Kong impressed the students and lecturers at Deakin University with his technical competencies while collaborating to produce a mobile game software. And over in Bangkok, Thailand, engineers at Honeywell Pte Ltd got a little help through Tan Ting Sin, a young fast learner who made his presence felt.

These three ITE graduates were participants of the ITE’s Global Education Programme, that was introduced last year, to expose students to new environments that would help develop their cultural sensitivity and flexibility. The lads also emerged as ITE’s top graduates for 2006, and were singled out by Mr Gan Kim Yong, Minister of State for Education and Manpower, as he addressed audience on how ITE graduates had benefited from the new initiative.

A Field of Opportunity beyond Our Shores
Speaking at the ITE Graduation Ceremony on 6 September 2006, Mr Gan said: “Not only has the exposure broadened their perspectives, it has also trained them to be independent, adaptable and responsible individuals. Such traits are important when faced with challenges in an increasingly competitive global environment.” To date, more than 1,200 ITE students had been given the chance to venture out of their comfort zone and taste a slice of the world, under the Global Education Programme.

Agreeing with the Minister, Lee Kuan Yew Gold Medal winner, Darin Cheong, shared: “Also, in the course of immersing yourself in a new environment, you will learn to respect the perspectives and cultures that are different from your own. You learn to become more accommodating. This was what I experienced first-hand, and it has prepared me mentally should opportunities of an overseas posting come my way in the near future.” Darin had graduated from ITE College West with a Nitec in Electronics (Computer & Networking).

Added Richard Kong, a Nitec in Info-Communications Technology graduate from ITE College Central, who also won the Tay Eng Soon Gold Medal: “We all should certainly look beyond our shores. It’s a field of opportunity out there. My experience interacting with the students at Deakin University has also exposed me to the different ways of thinking that stem from different cultural backgrounds. It has been a fruitful intellectual platform.”

Meeting Challenges with a New Mindset
Also raving about the valuable lessons he brought home, Ting Sin, who picked up a number of Thai words and phrases while serving his three-month attachment in Thailand, said: “I’ve to force myself to break the language barrier in order to communicate. You learn new elements and you know you can get by if you have that persistence. The experience has also given me a new mindset that would help me to meet challenges be it in Singapore or overseas.” The Sng Yew Chong Gold Medal winner, who is a Nitec in Chemical Process Technology graduate from ITE College West, is still working on projects with the Singapore Division of Honeywell Pte Ltd.

All three agreed that the ITE’s Global Education Programme will go a long way in helping students grow their skills to navigate in a dynamic and competitive world.

The academic year saw 9,868 students graduating from ITE’s full-time, traineeship and part-time courses. Of these, 617 were awarded Certificates of Merit.
