When he was in Secondary 1 at Xinmin Secondary, Brendan Lee came in 8th in class for his mid-year examinations. It was during that point that he decided to set a high goal for himself – to become the top Normal (Technical) student in Singapore. When he shared this dream with his elder sister, she wisely told him to “focus on topping the class first, before thinking big.”

Brendan did just that. He worked hard and consistently topped his class each year. At the same time, he excelled in his Co-Curricular Activities, too.

Now a Nitec in Service Skills (Office) student at ITE College Central, Brendan was honoured with double awards during a Special Awards Presentation Ceremony organised by the Ministry of Education on 22 August 2006. He won the Lee Kuan Yew (LKY) All Round Excellence Award and the LKY Award for Outstanding Normal Course Students.

The other ITE winners were: Muhammad Mizra from ITE College East (LKY All Round Excellence Award) and Veneza Yew from ITE College Central (LKY Award for Outstanding Normal Course Students). They received their awards from Guest-of-Honour, RADM (NS) Lui Tuck Yew, Minister of State for Education.

LKY-STEP Award Recipients Glad They Made the Right Choice
Besides these award recipients, another eight ITE graduates received the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship To Encourage uPgrading (LKY-STEP) awards during the ceremony. These annual scholarships are given to outstanding ITE graduates at the polytechnics.

All eight were outstanding in their academic pursuits and Co-Curricular Activities. For example, award recipient Harwant Singh Gill organised numerous community events as Chairman of the Community Service Club at ITE College Central. He was also a peer tutor. “Being in ITE was unforgettable and meaningful. I really, really enjoyed every minute of my time there,” said Harwant.

The graduates also felt that their stay at ITE was well worth the while, as it helped them to develop their self-confidence and leadership skills.

One award recipient who was glad to have opted to come to ITE was Mohamed Nizamudeen bin Abdul Rahman. After his GCE ‘O’ levels at Siglap Secondary School, Mohamed Nizamudeen had qualified for a three-year Pre-University course, as well as several other courses at the polytechnics. Instead, he decided to take up Higher Nitec in Mechanical Engineering at ITE College Central.

Recalled Nizamudeen: “My friends and relatives told me it was a waste to give up a shot at ‘A’ levels. Even my parents were a bit disappointed in me, although they supported me and respected my decision. But I knew what I wanted – which is to acquire useful technical skills. I felt ITE will open many more avenues for me.” Nizamudeen aced his ITE studies and is now a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering student at Singapore Polytechnic.
