The former ITE College West student, who graduated with a Nitec in Electronics (Computer Technology) in 2002, first dabbled in computers when he was the Head Student Librarian and Laboratory Technician Assistant at Bendemeer Secondary School. Those early years of working with computers piqued his interest enough for him to seriously consider exploring study options in that area. After completing his ‘N’ levels, Jian Hui looked to ITE to continue his education as ITE courses were close to his interests. It proved to be the right move. Jian Hui not only excelled in his Nitec course, he went on to graduate amongst the top in his cohort at Temasek Polytechnic this year. He also clinched the coveted Tay Eng Soon Gold Medal, an Award given to ITE graduates who excel at the Polytechnics. And soon, Jian Hui will embark on a Computer Engineering Degree programme at the Nanyang Technological University. “I
Can, Too!” “What really motivated me to do well were my seniors in the Polytechnic and ITE. They have proven that, with hard work and determination, they could also go to university,” shared the affable 22-year-old. “I’d always told myself that if I were to put in my best efforts, I could be just like them.” Jian Hui is also grateful for the constant support and guidance given by his lecturers at ITE Balestier, in particular, Ms Chan Lay Lee, Course Manager/Electronics (Computer Technology), and Mr Lim Sin Poh, who was his Class Advisor. He recalled: “Ms Chan encouraged us a lot and gave us advice on polytechnic education, while Mr Lim frequently told us of ITE students who have gone on to university and urged us to emulate these seniors. I would not have made it thus far without them.” A
Strong Foundation, A Valuable Head Start On his plans for the future, Jian Hui hopes to become a computer programmer or a lecturer at ITE, as “coming from the same educational background as ITE students, I want to teach them not to give up on themselves and to do their best!”
