The
Singapore VTE – Established and Adaptable
The Singapore
Vocational & Technical Education (VTE) system has certainly come
a long way since the 1960s. And the system, which has transformed itself
to meet the demands of the Singapore economy, is an adaptable one. This
was one of the key messages by Mr Gan Kim Yong, Minister of State for
Education and Manpower. Mr Gan was the Guest-of-Honour of the Opening
Ceremony of the first International Conference on Vocational & Technical
Education (VTE). Organised by ITE, the Conference was attended by some
400 participants from 20 countries.

Renews MOU with Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, Baden-Württemberg,
Germany
Mr Gan Kim
Yong, Minister of State for Education and Manpower, Dr Law Song Seng,
Director & CEO, ITE and other delegates from Singapore were in Germany
recently for the renewal of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between
the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, Baden-Württemberg (KM)
and Institute of Technical Education (ITE), Singapore, for a fourth term.
The signing of the fourth MOU reaffirmed ITE and Baden-Württemberg's
commitment to this bilateral cooperation between
the two countries.
All
Ready in a Globalised World
At the ITE Graduation Ceremony on 6 September 2006, Mr Gan Kim Yong, Minister
of State for Education and Manpower spoke on how ITE students have benefited
from ITE’s Global Education Programme. He
said: “Not only has the exposure broadened their perspectives, it
has also trained them to be independent, adaptable, and responsible individuals.
Such traits are important when faced with challenges in an increasingly
competitive global environment.”
Woman
of Substance
Thirty-eight years of contributing selflessly and tirelessly to Nursing
has not gone unnoticed. The dedication of Ms Gwee Mui Boon is being recognised
when she won the coveted President’s Award
for Nurses. Ms Gwee, the Health Science Course Manager at ITE College
East, is acknowledged for her significant and sustained contributions
to the Nursing profession. She received the Award from President S R Nathan
at the Istana recently.
The
Greater Good of the Great Outdoors
The Teach
Less, Learn More concept has found an unusual fervour at ITE. A group
of 40 ITE College West students went canoeing with some ‘special
friends’ down the Kallang River. For a day, the river was their
‘classroom’, where they learnt beyond the wonders of nature
and the thrills of the water sport. If the jubilant faces of the disadvantaged
were anything to go by, the outdoor classroom, dubbed the ‘River
of Friendship’ project, was a success. Lecturer-in-charge, Ms
Rabaah Sman, explained: “The smiles said it all. I am so proud of
my students.”
