The Lady Calls the Shots

THE LADY CALLS THE SHOTS

by Victor Yen

You have to hand it to career woman, Amy Lai. As the Assistant Director of Sales - Business Development, at Traders Hotel, Singapore, she is responsible for boosting sales figures, handling corporate clients, and promoting the MICE (Meetings, Incentive, Conventions and Exhibitions) business for her hotel. Amy is a shining example of an ITE graduate who has done well for herself in her career.

Excelling On-The-Job
Success, however, did not happen overnight. Armed with Higher Nitec in Business Studies (Administration) – Amy landed her first job in administration with law firm, Allen and Glenhill. Six months into the job, she found her calling – to serve.

Amy made a career switch to the hotel industry and worked as a Public Relations Assistant cum Secretary at the Singapore Marriot Hotel. Fortunate to be part of the hotel’s pioneering team, she was given the opportunity to learn the intricacies of hotel operations. At the same time, she pursued a Diploma in Sales and Marketing to further equip herself for the competitive service industry.

After acquiring her diploma, she joined Hotel New Otani as a Sales Executive. “As a new Sales Executive, I had to put in great effort to learn every skill possible,” recalled Amy. Her efforts paid off. Amy was promoted after just six months. But, her big break came when she joined Traders Hotel. There, she was promoted to her current management post in just two years. She said: “My career in the hospitality industry had its ups and downs, but, I stayed positive and kept an open mind.”

Secret Formula
“ITE was, however, the place that started it all for me,” reminisced Amy. Describing her experience in ITE as the most enjoyable time of her life, she revealed that ITE instilled in her confidence and people skills. “I used to be quiet and shy during my secondary school days. It was at ITE that I found myself opening up.” It helped that she was entrusted with leadership roles whilst at ITE. For instance, she set up a Shorthand Writers’ Club and served as its first President.

Ask her what she thought was her winning formula, Amy was quick to attribute it to self-belief. That, she believes will see her progress in her career in the hospitality sector.
