PREPPING UP ITE’s FIRST DIPLOMA PROGRAMME

by Jailani Nathan

ITE’s first niche Diploma Programme, the new Technical Engineer Diploma (TED) in Machine Technology course, has gotten off to a smooth start before its official rollout in April 2008. Thirteen ITE Lecturers from the Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics Engineering Departments of ITE College West have been identified and primed for their roles as TED Lecturers. They went under the wings of consultants from the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports training, and were put through a three-week stint on curriculum and training methodology, since September 2007.

Raring to Go
“The implementation of TED is a milestone for ITE,” said Dr Yek Tiew Ming, Principal, ITE College West. It is offered in collaboration with ITE’s long-standing partner in Germany – Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, Baden-Württemberg. “We are close to 100 per cent ready, and are raring to go.” The TED, modeled after Germany’s Staatlich Geprufter Techniker (State Certified Engineer) course, will be taught at ITE College West, Dover Campus.

Mr Koh Kim Hoe, Lecturer/Mechatronics Engineering, who was trained by the German consultants, said of his training, “We were given a broad overview of the range of topics taught within the German curriculum of the TED equivalent. We also discussed and analysed the suitability of the topics that would facilitate a natural knowledge and skills progression for our students whose engineering foundation has been honed whilst in ITE,” said Mr Koh.

On Schedule
Come next January, Mr Koh and other selected lecturers will be heading for Germany, for the second half of the training, where they would finalise the TED curriculum topics. One of the three German consultants involved in the training, Mr Robert Hoenmann, said: “We are on schedule in terms of the preparation of curriculum and training of ITE staff for the TED programme. We are optimistic that this programme is right on track and will take off the way we want.”

Students can apply for the new two-year diploma course from 26 November 2007 to 6 January 2008. Those who are successful can also look forward to scholarships and an 18-month job stint within the industry. For these students, a chance to further their studies in Germany’s Universities of Applied Sciences, also beckons. For a start, the TED in Machine Technology will open up a new progression path for some 50 ITE graduates from the Precision and Mechanical Engineering disciplines.
