Musical CNY greetings from the
Chinese Orchestra |
On 9 Feb 2006, 150 elderly persons under Project SPHERE and 100 student volunteers from the 5 Community Service Clubs and Interact Club at College Central came together at Macpherson campus to celebrate Chinese New Year. SPHERE is an acronym for S tudents, Singapore Pools and HDB Enriching and Reaching out to the Elderly.
The celebration event to spread cheer during the festive season is an ongoing College effort to give our students an early taste of community service, instill in them a healthy respect for our elder folk, and enable them to appreciate how service to others (in whatever capacity) can help lift spirits in ways they may never have imagined. Guiding them along with “invisible hands” were, of course, our community service staff representatives and colleagues from our Student Services Department.
On hand to kick off the concert was Mdm Cheong Hwa Yew (D/STAS). With varied items like dance performances, skits and a wushu performance, even a hip-hop dance, the concert must have left our guests both bewildered and intrigued by what a range of activities our younger generation get up to these days.

Perhaps the highlight for some was the montage of slides featuring past activities organized under Project SPHERE. Going by the finger pointing and knowing nods in the audience, it must have brought back fond memories for many of them.
The day rounded off with a reception and a mini-games carnival - certainly a memorable day for our elderly guests, student volunteers and staff!
