Xtreme Fun @ Xtreme Fiesta
|
|||||
A total of more than 2,400 students from Secondary Schools and three ITE Colleges participated in the “Xtreme Fiesta” held at ITE College Central (Yishun Campus) on 21 October 2008. It was a day of fun, exhilaration and adrenaline-pumping moments for all who turned up at Yishun Campus either as competitors in the Xtreme Race or supporters who came to enjoy and soak in the Fiesta carnival atmosphere.
Participants getting ready
Off they go!!
The one-day event was graced by our Director and CEO/ITE, Mr Bruce Poh, who was seen soaking in the carnival atmosphere as he tried his hands on the different games meant to stimulate the senses such as golf, archery and puzzle games.
Inviting our CEO to have a go at golf ……and he obliged with a hole-in-one! The “Xtreme Fiesta” presented participants with opportunities to engage themselves in different disciplines of outdoor activities (that were suitable for both the adventurous and the recreational youths), healthy lifestyle activities and community bonding activities. Participants pitted their strengths and teamwork against other teams in the adventure race. They had to race as a team in the 1.8km Road Run; maneuver the 2km nature terrains in the Nature Trail Blazing; traverse across a 20m monsoon drain by means of a Tyrolean system, shoot a target with a bow and arrow and finally complete a team challenge by climbing over a high wall.
Though the participants returned from the race with cuts and bruises, they had enjoyed themselves. Their spirits were high as they learned to persevere and become more resolute as they overcame the challenges throughout the race. The treasure hunt race provided participants with many opportunities to work as a team. Looking for checkpoints and solving mind boggling puzzle activities added the element of fun, enjoyment and intrigue.

The Fiesta portion of the event was a carnival-like environment for the participants. They enjoyed the arts performances and participated in the numerous recreational activities such as golf, inline skating, touch ball and scaling the inflatable rocky mountain. The Arts performances such as music and drama; and the health information boards on healthy lifestyle not only provided the participants with the knowledge of healthy living, but also educated participants with fundamentals on how to manage and acquire positive mental health and stress-management skills. Through engagement in the various sporting activities, participants understood that healthy living and sporting lifestyle could be achieved through various activities and more so in their very own backyard. All it takes is just a little imagination.
Having fun at Fiesta carnival for healthy living
By integrating the teams together, through supporting their teammates and at the same time competing with other team members, it provided participants with learning opportunities in interpersonal skills, which are vital for personal growth and social cohesiveness. It was evident from the faces of all participants that they had displayed qualities of leadership, teamwork and resilience in extreme adversity as they maneuvered and overcame the challenges in the race; qualities that are important for their success in future endeavours. Above all, the “Xtreme Fiesta” @ College Central had provided the participants with a platform for self-discovery through experience, creativity and exploration through group challenges, personal challenge at the individual’s pace and self-reflection for character development. Jackie Ng, from Bishan Campus, took part in the Xtreme Race and commented that it was a very exciting race, especially the Tyrolean crossing. He further proposed that more of such activities should be organised for ITE students so as to encourage healthy living amongst the students. A teacher from the secondary school was very impressed with the whole race as his students had truly enjoyed themselves and looked forward to participating in more ITE events in particular the “Beach Fiesta 2009”. The champion for the ITE category was the team from College West and the champion for the schools category was the team from Christ Church Secondary School. However all those who were present on that day and had participated in the activities were winners as they had acquired new skills and understood that healthy living could be achieved by many different and exciting ways; be it rigorous extreme sports or easy-going recreational activities.
