Make Poverty History
By Mohd Hirman Mohamed Tohir

“Stand Up 2008” is a global initiative organised by the United Nations Millennium Campaign in collaboration with the Global Call to act against poverty in 127 countries. 150 Year 1 students from Higher Nitec in Business Studies (Administration) participated
in this event on 15 Oct 2008.

This effort was brought to create awareness about the lack of money and the extent of poverty all over the world. Poverty is something that most of the youths and young adults in Singapore may not have faced first-hand, owing to the creature comforts available in prosperous Singapore. The awakening presentation was delivered by Michael Switow, co-founder of ‘One Singapore’, to show the true issues faced by people in poverty.

A showoff hands by those who were willing to go the extra mile to help the needy

The session showed the plight of poor people in other nations facing not only hunger, but also the lack of medical resources, skilled doctors and nurses that culminated in the death of many women who suffered and died during childbirth. It also enlightened the students in how to encourage the governments around the world to deal with the
problem of poverty, so that everyone can contribute collectively.

Students were made not only to stand up as a symbolic action to pledge their support for this global initiative, but also to send a powerful message to the governments around
the world to deal with the problem of poverty.
