On 31 Oct 2008, at 2230 hours, several staff from College West, together with 90 students from Business IT, Fitness and Training, and Banking Services courses assembled enthusiastically at East Coast Carpark 4 to begin their cycling challenge. The intended route from East Coast Park to Changi Village and back covers an estimated distance of 40 km.
The Fitness and Training students were assigned as leaders of the convoy. They led and conducted a warm-up session before setting off with their respective groups. Finally, the event flagged off at 2330hrs. The cyclists, accompanied by a first-aid vehicle, headed towards the Changi Ferry Terminal for their first pit stop.
Hang on, we are going to complete the race.
It was a beautiful evening and the students were exceedingly excited as they continued with the journey. The thought of having the famous Changi Village Nasi Lemak for supper spurred them on. At about 0200 hours, they finally earned the much desired rice in coconut milk and satisfied their hunger pangs. After the food, they decided to head back towards East Coast. However, rain started to pour. Everyone was challenged by the wet weather and slippery roads but this did not dampen their spirits. They persevered on, giving moral support and encouragement to each other.
We have arrived.
Upon completion of the adventure, the experience had been an exhilarating and challenging one for everybody. The students bonded well and got to relate to their staff in a more personal and informal manner. This experience also taught the students to be more confident in overcoming obstacles in life. They have learnt not to be overwhelmed by the problems or obstacles they see, but to adopt the right mindset and focus to achieve their goals. |
