ITE – A Home Team Player in Keeping Singapore Safe |
Senior Parliamentary Secretary Mr Masagos Zulkifli presenting the Award to Principal of ITE College Central, Mr Tan Seng Hua
The Home Team National Service Award Presentation Ceremony was held on 13 Nov 2008 and marks the third time in which College Central has won the Meritorious Home Team Partner Award. The Guest-Of-Honour who graced the occasion was Mr K. Shanmugam, Minister for Law and Second Minister for Home Affairs, along with Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Mr Masagos Zulkifli was also present for the ceremony. The Home Team NS awards recognise National Service men (NSmen) and their employers who jointly contribute towards National Service with the Home Team. It pays special tribute and homage to employers who go the extra mile in supporting their employees who are called to serve. Having the honour of accompanying Principal of College Central, Mr Tan Seng Hua, Director Administration, Ms Florence Ang and I were pleasantly surprised at the number of awardees in the same category which included Singapore Technologies Aerospace Ltd, NTUC Fairprice Coop Ltd and the Ministry of Education just to name a few. Prior to the commencement of dinner, Mr K. Shanmugam concluded his speech by congratulating the award recipients and thanked them all for their dedication and contributions to National Service, emphasizing that each and every one of us has an important role to play in keeping Singapore safe. The event ended with a surprise celebrity appearance by Taufik Batisah. I did not waste time in securing my photo opportunity with the Singapore Idol.

My perspective on National Service is that we all have a part to play no matter how small. I serve in the Police Coast Guard (PCG) during my reservist recalls as a Small Arms Instructor and train both NSmen and regulars. Based on upcoming international events such as the Youth Olympics, National Servicemen will play an even greater role in supplementing regular officers from the Singapore Police Force (SPF) and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). They will be vital in supporting these signature events and making Singapore one of the safest places on the globe.
