Handmade with Love: GAT Markets Handiwork by the Less Privileged
By Mavis Yeow

cc61C!AHS, one of the Clubs in the School of Applied and Health Science, provides a platform for nursing students  to perform community work amongst the many other activities carried out by the students over the duration of their 2-year course.

For the past nine months, a handful of our ITE nursing students had been volunteering their services at GAT( Gift & Take) which is one of the many social enterprise booths at PaTH (Pop and Talent Hub) under the umbrella of the Singapore Innovation Park. This is an ongoing monthly fair conducted on every first and last weekend of the month at the open spaces of level 3 VivoCity next to Food Republic.

The main aim of GAT is to market socially-conscious handicraft gifts.  The goods consist mainly of handmade crafts by less-privileged people in Singapore and some parts of Asia – such as landmine victims in Cambodia, and mothers of cancer sufferers from Singapore, etc.  Each piece of handiwork comes with a signature tag that explains the origin of the craftwork, thus, serving as a reminder to the seller and the buyer the significance of each gift item and the ideals that GAT embraces.

GAT’s sole mission is “to market products handcrafted by the impoverished, disabled and disadvantaged in this world.” Therefore through the participation in setting up of booths and sales of the handicraft items, our students are exposed to social entrepreneurship and social responsibility.

Hence, this collaboration with GAT allows our nursing students to have a broader sense of social involvement when working with the disadvantaged or marginalized group of people.

So far, positive feedback has been received from students as they have gathered invaluable experience by not only learning the basic skills of setting up a booth display but also throughout the sales process. They were able to practice their communication skills when they needed to convey the message of social responsibility while giving an explanation of each gift items to potential buyers.

Through the exposure, the students were challenged to think on their feet, with their “hands”, for a cause from the “heart” – and hence echoed the ITE brand of “Hands on”, “Hearts on” and “Minds on” education.
