Learn Life-saving Skills in Community Emergency Preparedness Programme (CEPP)
By Sharon Lee

During the September term vacation, some 80 staff attended the workshop on Emergency Preparedness conducted by Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). The workshop provided the participants with a demonstration and hands-on experience on basic first aid, cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), fire fighting and fire safety. Staff also learnt how to deal with threats of terrorism; peacetime emergencies; in-place protection and shelter management.

CE Staff Participants were taught on the theory about basic first aid and CPR before the demonstration.

All the participants had a fruitful time learning the practical application of the course, judging from the good feedback we received and the smiles on their faces! Below are some snapshots of the participants captured during the programme.

The paramedics from SCDF demonstrated the CPR procedure step by step, from positioning
the victim to opening of the airway, checking on breathing, performing mouth-to-mouth
ventilation to external chest compression

Millie Chee practicing how to tilt the victim’s head to open his airway, followed by pinching his nose and giving 2 short quick breaths of mouth-to- mouth ventilation.
Andrew Lim performing chest compression on the victim. He has to complete 5 cycles of 30 compressions and 2 short quick ventilations within 2 minutes. Quite a tough feat itself!
Based on the course feedback, staff participants of the CEPP programme found that the hands-on practices on CPR useful and engaging. The majority of them felt that the learning of critical life-saving skills an important aid in discharging their daily duties.

With the pilot run of the CEPP programme well-received by staff, subsequent runs of the training programme would be organised for more ITE colleagues to attend in the following year.
