History

ITE College West (Ang Mo Kio Campus) was known as Ang Mo Kio Vocational Institute (AMKVI) in the past. It was one of the vocational institutes of the Vocational & Industrial Training Board (VITB), the predecessor organisation of ITE.

The sprawling Campus stands large along the busy Central Expressway, making it a prominent education institution in Ang Mo Kio, which is one of the largest public housing estates in Singapore. With its first admission of 1,300 students in January 1985, AMKVI had played important roles in producing thousands of skilled manpower to support the industries in the past 20 years.

The term "Ang Mo Kio" is a colloquial Chinese dialect. Translated into English, it means "red bridge". Let's look at the old logo of AMKVI:

The logo shows two opened doors. The door on the left represents the academic education environment, and the right door, the world of work. Linking these two environments is a solid red bridge - Ang Mo Kio Vocational Institute (AMKVI). It signifies that students leaving the environment of academic education for the world of work has this bridge to train and help them. The choice of red as the colour for the logo was influenced by the "red bridge", as well as the challenge and determination to excel in vocational training.
