Entry Requirements

For GCE 'O' school leavers, you need to have at least Three GCE 'O' Level Grades:

Grades 1 - 7 in English Language,
Grades 1 - 7 in Mathematics (Elementary or Additional) or Principles of Accounts and
Grades 1 - 7 in one other subject.

 
Course Synopsis

On completion of the course, students should be able to:

Process various types of frontline banking transactions.

Demonstrate effective customer service skills.
Handle cash and cash balancing.
Process non-cash transactions.
Handle various banking and financial instruments.
Perform basic accounting.
Refer various banking products and services to customers.

Career Prospects

Higher Nitec in Banking Services graduates are employed as Bank Tellers or Customer Service Representatives in banks, insurance companies and other financial institutions. Bank tellers with work experience and good performance maybe promoted to a bank officer level or special grade clerk. There are opportunities for career advancement to supervisory positions and beyond. The challenge is for you to prepare yourself by upgrading your skills and knowledge by taking up higher-level courses.

CORE MODULES

- Service Quality and Communications (7 credits)
On completion of this module, students should be able to interact with customers using effective communication techniques, provide customer service and handle customer enquiries, requests and feedback, and handle service breakdown and recovery.
- Office Applications (5 credits)
On completion of the module, student should be able to product office documents, process and organize data, create simple personal and business homepage and create presentations using commonly used software packages as well as send, retrieve and search for information using internet and electronic mail.
- Business Fundamentals (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to give an
overview of the general business and the importance of international business. Students are also trained to explain the use of statistics in business and to interpret common statistical information. Students are also trained on customer services strategies, standards and recovery.
- Accounting Fundamentals (5 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to record business transactions and prepare bank reconciliation statements and control accounts.
- Banking Products and Services (7 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to identify the different banking and financial services by local and foreign banks and similar financial institutions. Students would also be able to apply skills and knowledge in the various banking products and services offered to its clients.
- Customer Relationship Management (7 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to cultivate good customer service quality, customer contact and rapport.
- Banking Operations (7 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to apply skills and knowledge about the operations within a bank and be able to handle various banking transactions such as deposits, withdrawals, bill payments and other cash and non-cash financial instruments.
- Industry Attachment (8 credits)
Students will get hands on training through a five-month Industry
Attachment where they will be exposed to various operational aspects of banks and banking services and apply what they have learnt in the classroom


LIFE SKILLS MODULES

- Life Skills for Personal Development (8 credits)
Life skills in broad terms are the foundation skills and personal qualities that an individual can transfer from one job setting to another to manage and adapt to changes in technology and work environments.
- Sports and Wellness I (1 credit)
On completion of the module, students should be able to maintain a fit and healthy body and develop an appreciation of sports and games.
- Sports and Wellness II (1 credit)
On completion of the module, students should be able to maintain a fit and healthy body and develop an appreciation of sports and games.

ELECTIVES

On completion of the module, students should be able to describe the role of public relations and the scope and nature of public relations work.
- Financial Planning (4 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to apply knowledge and skills acquired in preparing a basic financial plan for various needs of individuals.

- Entrepreneurship (4 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to apply knowledge and skills acquired from the course to identify a business opportunity and to develop a business plan for launching and operating a small enterprise. The training also covers market competitor analysis, and fundamentals of business finance.

- Overseas Experiential Programme (2 or 3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to develop
leadership qualities, self-confidence, independence, cross-cultural
interaction skills and other life skills.
