Entry Requirements

For GCE 'O' school leavers, you need to have at least Three GCE 'O' Level Grades:

Grades 1 - 6 in English Language,
Grades 1 - 8 in Mathematics (Elementary or Additional) and
Grades 1 - 7 in one other subject.

For ITE graduates, you must have obtained at least a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.8 for your Nitec in Service Skills qualifications.

 
Course Synopsis

On completion of the course, students should be able to:

Manage and execute sport and recreation events.
Maintain and upkeep sports equipment and facilities.
Provide administrative and operational support for sports management activities.
Provide fitness and customer service support to clients of gyms, country clubs and other fitness and sports clubs/association.

CORE MODULES

- Business Communication (7 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to communicate effectively and handle both oral and written communications required in a business/work environment.
- Office Applications (5 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to produce office documents, process and organise data, create simple personal and business homepage and create presentations using commonly used software packages as well as send, retrieve and search for information using internet and electronic mail.
- Business Fundamentals (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to give an overview of the general business and the importance of international business. Students are also trained to explain the use of statistics in business and to interpret common statistical information. Students are also trained on customer service strategies, standards and recovery
- Principles of Marketing (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to understand the basic concepts of marketing involving the use of the 4 Ps; i.e. the marketing mix so that they are able to apply these concepts in the workplace.
- Sports Administration (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to plan and schedule sports and recreational programs, perform stocktaking and inventory control, handle registration matters, update and maintain client’s database, inspect facilities and check that equipment are clean and in working condition and to be equipped with knowledge on emergency evacuation, crowd management and first aid.
- Introduction to Sports Science (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to identify nutritional factors and dietary plans which maintain optimal health and to develop personal weight management plans. This module will give the students a basic understanding of exercise physiology and will cover topics such as introduction to the human anatomy, the skeletal system and the concepts of kinematics and kinetics.
- Fundamentals of Fitness (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to assist in the assessment of clients fitness needs and in the planning and implementation of fitness programmes. They will also learn the principles of training, concepts and types of resistance, weight and flexibility training, proper exercise etiquette, exercise techniques for various fitness training, basic exercise for people with special needs and guidelines for safe exercise and injury prevention
- Sport Event Management (5 credits)
This module provides students with an understanding of the components necessary for successful management of sports events. These include the choice of an appropriate competition format, the management of the logistical demands of a sports event, the co-ordination of event and safety requirements and the preparation of budget proposal. The importance of sponsorship and public relations, marketing and promotions are also emphasized.
- Industry Attachment (7 credits)
Students will get hands-on training through a two-month Industry Attachment where they will be exposed to various operational aspects of managing a sport and fitness facility and apply what they have learnt in the classroom.

- Life Skills for Personal Development (8 credits)
Life skills in broad terms are the foundation skills and personal qualities that an individual can transfer from one job setting to another to manage and adapt to changes in technology and work environments.
- Sports and Wellness I (1 credit)
On completion of the module, students should be able to maintain a fit and healthy body and develop an appreciation of sports and games.
- Sports and Wellness II (1 credit)
On completion of the module, students should be able to maintain a fit and healthy body and develop an appreciation of sports and games.

- Banking and Financial Services (4 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to identify the different banking and financial services provided by private and government financial institutions.
- Business Statistics (4 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to compute and present statistical data for use in business. The training covers collection, organization and presentation of statistical data, measures of central tendency, dispersion and normal distribution, index numbers, time series analysis, regression and correlation analysis.
- Human Resource Administration (4 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to explain the various aspects of a human resource department in an organization.
- Tourism Products and Services (4 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to describe the various products and services offered in the travel and tourism industry and other travel-related services.
- Introduction to Outdoor Recreation (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to apply knowledge and skills learnt to help conduct and facilitate basic outdoor recreation activities.
- Fitness Club Management (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to carry out basic operation work and technical training duties in a fitness club setup.
- Essentials of Sports Coaching (2 credits)

On completion of the module, students should be able to acquire knowledge of how coaching affects the development of sporting activities and the development of athletes.

- Entrepreneurship (4 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to apply the knowledge and skills acquired from the course to identify a business opportunity and to develop a business plan for launching and operating a small enterprise. The training also covers market and competitor analysis, and fundamentals of business finance.
- First Aid, CPR and Sports Injuries (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to apply basic concepts and principles of first aid to render first aid treatment at the workplace and perform CPR during an emergency.
   
Electives (General)  
- Business Mandarin (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to converse in mandarin in the business environment and be able to develop skills in interpreting business correspondence. The scope of training covers brief introduction of business environment, business etiquette, communication techniques and business correspondence.
- Overseas Experiential Programme (2 to 3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to develop leadership qualities, self-confidence, independence, cross-cultural interaction skills and other life skills.
