CORE MODULES

- Communication Effectiveness (7 credits)
On completion of this module, students should be able to communicate effectively and handle both oral and written communications required in a childcare environment.
- Office Applications (5 credits)
On completion of this module, students should be able to produce office documents, process and organise data, create simple personal and business homepage and create presentations using commonly used software packages as well as send, retrieve and search for information using the internet and electronic mail.
- Early Child Development (6 credits)
On completion of this module, students should be able to understand how children learn and develop in their early years, with a focus on the inter-related stages of early development in young children, especially in relation to children’s play behaviour.
- Principles and Practices in Preschool Education (6 credits)
On completion of this module, students should be able to understand the principles of child care and development; be aware of health and safety features; learn to build relationship with children, their parents, families, and others concerned with the education, care and welfare of the child.
- Learning Environments (5 credits)
On completion of this module, students should be able to plan for exploring, discovering, and learning in a variety of settings; create spaces for learning; provide challenges for learning and balance the
needs and interests of children with learning outcomes.
- The Communication Curriculum (5 credits)
On completion of this module, students should be able to learn the numerous ways of developing and providing for the language and communication curriculum in childcare settings as well as explore the use of drama and mime in the provision for personal, social and emotional development.
- The Discovery Curriculum (7 credits)
On completion of this module, students should be able to learn the numerous ways of developing and providing for the numeracy, natural science and environmental awareness curriculum in childcare settings with an additional focus on physical and health development and the provision for indoor and outdoor play.
- The Aesthetic Curriculum (5 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to develop young children’s representational skills in a variety of forms through art and craft, dance, music, and movement.
- Industry Attachment (7 credits)
Students are provided with the opportunity to work with childcare centres and kindergartens to gain practical ‘hands on’ experience specifically designed to relate and extend participants’ theoretical knowledge gleaned during the course.

LIFE SKILLS MODULES

- Life Skills for Personal Development (8 credits)
Life skills in broad terms are the foundation skills and personal qualities that an individual can transfer from one job setting to another to manage and adapt to changes in technology and work environments.
- Sports and Wellness I (1 credit)
On completion of the module, students should be able to maintain a fit and healthy body and develop an appreciation of sports and games.
- Sports and Wellness II (1 credit)
On completion of the module, students should be able to maintain a fit and healthy body and develop an appreciation of sports and games.

- Public Relations (5 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to describe the role of public relations and the scope and nature of public relations work.
- Human Resource Administration (4 credits)
On completion of the course, students should be able to explain the various aspects of a human resource department in an organisation.
- Principles of Management (4 credits)
On completion of the course, students should be able to relate the principles of management to the activities and role of a secretarial/administration appointment in the present day organisation.

- Entrepreneurship (4 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to apply the
knowledge and skills acquired from the course to identify a business opportunity and to develop a business plan for launching and operating a small enterprise. The training also covers market and competitor analysis and fundamentals of business finance.
- Web Publishing (5 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to lay out web pages, create and update basic HTML documents; incorporate images, links and anchors, lists and tables, forms, web-based animation and multimedia elements into HTML documents; create HTML documents with frames; connect website with web hosting service provider; and register website with directory services providers and search engines. The training also covers issues relating to ethics and intellectual property
protection.

- First Aid, CPR and Sports Injuries (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to apply basic concepts and principles of first aid to render first aid treatment at the workplace and perform CPR during an emergency.

Business Mandarin (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to listen and
comprehend the Chinese language and engage in simple dialogues and transactional discourse in a range of common everyday situations using the correct vocabulary, sentence structure, stress intonation and pronunciation.

Elementary Japanese (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to read Japanese in Romanised script and communicate in Japanese using the correct vocabulary, sentence structure, stress intonation, pronunciation when making and responding to enquiries in a bank, travel agency, shop, restaurant and post office.
- Overseas Experiential Programme
On completion of the module, students should be able to develop
leadership qualities, self-confidence, independence, cross-cultural
interaction skills and other life skills.
