Entry Requirements

For GCE 'O' school leavers, you need to have at least Three GCE 'O' Level Grades:

Grades 1 - 6 in English Language,
Grades 1 - 8 in Mathematics (Elementary or Additional) and
Grades 1 - 7 in one other subject.

For ITE graduates, you must have obtained at least a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.8 for your Nitec in Service Skills qualifications.

 
Course Synopsis

On completion of the course, students should be able to:

Handle reservations and guest history.
Handle guest arrivals and departures.
Handle cashiering functions.
Handle general enquiries on the hotel's facilities and services and other tourism-related matters.
Inspect guestrooms and public areas.
Handle security and safety concerns.
Perform sales and marketing functions.
Handle special events and functions.
Handle guest relations and expectations.
Handle comments and feedback from guests.
Handle service breakdown and recovery.

CORE MODULES

- Introduction to Hospitality and Tourism (8 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to identify the profile and travel patterns of travellers, their needs and requirements, and how resources are managed to meet their needs.
- Accommodation Services (7 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to handle the arrival and departure of guests, perform cashiering functions, and provide concierge services.
- Hospitality IT Services (7 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to create reservations, maintain customer database, update room and rate change, and check out guests using a property management system as well as prepare documents using common application software packages.
- Service Quality and Communication (7 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to interact with guests using effective communication techniques, handle local and overseas calls, draft business correspondence, handle guests' enquiries, requests and feedback, and service breakdown and recovery.
- Housekeeping Services (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to describe the functions and responsibilities of the housekeeping department, service guestrooms, follow up on crash programmes, inspect guestrooms and public areas, as well as handle security and safety concerns.
- Hospitality Sales and Marketing (8 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to conduct environmental scan of the hotel industry, identify market segments and target customers for the development of a marketing plan as well as prepare and present a sales proposal, and show room to potential guests.
- Event and Catering Management (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to plan and organise an event for a function held in the hotel.
- Industry Attachment (10 credits)
Students are provided with the opportunity to work in a hospitality setting for 6 months.

- Life Skills for Personal Development (8 credits)
Life skills in broad terms are the foundation skills and personal qualities that an individual can transfer from one job setting to another to manage and adapt to changes in technology and work environments.
- Sports and Wellness I (1 credit)
On completion of the module, students should be able to maintain a fit and healthy body and develop an appreciation of sports and games.
- Sports and Wellness II (1 credit)
On completion of the module, students should be able to maintain a fit and healthy body and develop an appreciation of sports and games.

- Human Resource Administration (4 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to explain the various aspects of a human resource department in an organization.

On completion of the module, students should be able to describe the role of public relations and the scope and nature of public relations work.
- Principles of International Commerce (4 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to apply the basic knowledge of importing goods from overseas with considerations of local requirements.

- Entrepreneurship (4 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to apply the knowledge and skills acquired from the course to identify a business opportunity and to develop a business plan for launching and operating a small enterprise. The training also covers market and competitor analysis, and fundamentals of business finance.

- Business Mandarin (3 credits)
Students should be able to converse in Mandarin in the business environment and be able to develop skills in interpreting business correspondence. The scope of training covers brief introduction of business environment, business etiquette, communication techniques and business correspondence.
- Overseas Experiental Programme (2 to 3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to develop leadership qualities, self-confidence, independence, cross-cultural interaction skills and other life skills.
