Entry Requirements

To apply for the Nitec in Building Drafting (Architectural) course, you must have:

Two GCE 'O' Level Grades (Grades 1 - 8) in any two subjects
Or three GCE 'N' Level Passes (Grades 1 - 5) in Mathematics and two other subjects

 
Course Synopsis

On completion of the course, you should be able to:

Produce freehand sketches.
Prepare building plans for fabrication purposes and submission to government for approval.
Prepare drawings for tender purposes.
Prepare working drawings for addition and alteration works on existing buildings.
Apply various techniques of rendering on presentation drawings.
Interpret building regulations.

- 2-D Drawing (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to interpret building drawings, prepare simple technical drawings and floor plan using manual and computer-aided drafting.
- Building Components Drawing
(8 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to interpret building drawings, prepare simple technical drawings and floor plan using manual and computer-aided drafting.
- Building Drawing (8 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to draw the constructional details of roof, ceiling and a set of building plans to comply with local authorities requirements using manual and computer-aided drafting.
- Civil and Structural Drawing (8 credits)
On completion of the module, students have been trained in simple structural calculations of resultant forces, bending moment diagram, shear force diagram and to prepare simple reinforced concrete drawings of structural components, steel detailed drawings using both manual and computer-aided drafting.

SPECIALISATION MODULES

- Construction Drawing (8 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to draw detailed drawings such as staircases, lift shaft, expansion joints, toilet, external building works, refuse chute and bin centre, using manual and computer-aided drafting.

Additions and Alterations Drawing (4 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to apply the knowledge of procedural submission and prepare a set of drawings for additions and alterations to conventional house using computer-aided drafting.
- Building Development Drawing (8 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to prepare a set of working drawings of low-rise residential buildings for planning permission, building plans approval and construction using computer-aided drafting.
- Presentation Drawing (8 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to prepare a set of presentation drawings for a 2-storey conventional house and rendered interior layout plans, perspectives of various habitable rooms using manual drafting.
- Project (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to plan and manage a project, and to apply the skills and knowledge acquired in the course of learning to solve practical problems.

Life skills in broad terms are the foundation skills and personal qualities that an individual can transfer from one job setting to another to manage and adapt to changes in technology and work environments.

On completion of the module, students should be able to calculate and prepare the bill of quantities for simple building work according to Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement Code.
- Model Making (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to construct an architectural presentation model.
- Presentation Drawing (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to produce a set of presentation drawing of a 3-/4- storey residential flat.
- 3D Architectural CAD (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to generate 3D model, photo realistic still images and animation using a 3D modelling and animation computer program.

- Heat Load and ETTV (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to estimate the cooling load requirement of an air-conditioned space, select equipment capacity required and the Envelope Thermal Transfer Values (ETTV) values in accordance to the local Building codes requirements.

On completion of the module, students should be able to give an overview of the general business environment, the functions and roles of the various departments in a business organisation and the importance of international business. Students are also trained to explain the use of statistics in business and to interpret common statistical information.

On completion of the module, students should be able to comprehend descriptive texts, write compositions of descriptive nature and communicate effectively and appropriately in speech and writing.

On completion of the module, students should be able to comprehend expository texts, write compositions of expository and persuasive nature, and communicate effectively and appropriately in speech and writing.

On completion of the module, students should be able to comprehend argumentative texts, write compositions of argumentative nature, and communicate effectively and appropriately in speech and writing.
