Entry Requirements

To apply for the Nitec in Building Drafting (Civil & Structural) course, you need to have:

Two GCE 'O' Level Grades (Grade 1 - 8) in any two subjects
Or three GCE 'N' Level Passes (Grade A - D or Grade 1 - 5) in Mathematics and two other subjects.

 
Course Synopsis

This course provides you with the technical skills and knowledge in preparing structural calculations, civil and structural engineering drawings, and quantities of reinforced concrete and steel members.

At the end of the course, you should be able to:

Calculate the quantities of materials for civil and structural engineering works.
Interpret civil and structural engineering and building drawings.
Interpret code of practices pertaining to civil and structural engineering works.
Prepare civil and structural engineering drawings.
Prepare steel structural details.

Progression Opportunities

Nitec in Building Drafting (Civil & Structural) graduates with GPA of 3.5 and above may apply for progression to the first year of a related diploma course at the polytechnics. After completing the diploma, you can go on to pursue a degree course at the university.

CORE MODULES

- 2-D Drawing (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to interpret building drawings, prepare simple technical drawings and floor plan using manual and computer-aided drafting.

Building Components Drawing (8 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to draw the constructional details of doors, windows, walls, foundations and floor systems of residential buildings, using manual and computer-aided drafting.
- Building Drawing (8 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to draw the constructional details of roof, ceiling and a set of building plans to comply with local authorities requirments using manual and computer-aided drafting.
- Civil and Structural Drawing (8 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to prepare simple reinforced concrete drawings of structural components, steel detailed drawings using both manual and computer-aided drafting.

SPECIALISATION MODULES

- Reinforced Concrete Drawing (8 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to prepare bar bending schedules, structural layout plans of building substructures and detailed drawings of reinforced concrete structures such as slabs, staircases, foundations, lift shafts and slabs using both manual and computer-aided drafting.
- RC Beam and Slab Drawing (4 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to prepare detailed drawing of RC staircases, beams and slabs of a building using computer-aided drafting.
- Steel Structure Drawing (8 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to produce a set of steel structure working drawings with detailed connections of steel members using manual drafting and computer-aided drafting.
- Civil Engineering Drawing (8 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to apply the knowledge of building construction equipment, road construction, and to prepare detailed external works and civil engineering drawings such as manholes, roads, culverts, drainage and sewerage systems.
- Project (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to plan and manage a project, and to apply the skills and knowlege acquired in the course of learning to solve practical problems.

LIFE SKILLS MODULES

- Life Skills for Personal Development (8 credits) and Life Skills at the Workplace (4 credits)
Life skills in broad terms are the foundation skills and personal qualities that an individual can transfer from one job setting to another to manage and adapt to changes in technology and work environments.

On completion of the module, students should be able to maintain a fit and healthy body and develop an appreciation of sports and games.

On completion of the module, students should be able to maintain a fit and healthy body and develop an appreciation of sports and games.

- Elementary Quantities (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to calculate and prepare the bill of quantities for simple building work according to Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement Code.
- Model Making (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to construct an architectural presentation model.
- Presentation Drawing (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to produce a set of presentation drawing of a 3-/4- storey residential flat.
- 3D Architectural CAD (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to generate 3D model, photo-realistic still images & animation using a 3D modelling and animations computer program.

   
Electives (Inter-disciplinary)  
   

- Heat Load and ETTV (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to estimate the cooling load requirement of an air-conditioned space, select equipment capacity required and the Envelope Thermal Transfer Values (ETTV) values in accordance to the local Building codes requirements.
- Technical Mathematics (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to apply the knowledge of mathematics to solve engineering related problems involving the use of basic arithmetic, algebra, indices, graphs and trigonometry.

- Business Fundamentals (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to give an overview of the general business and the importance of international business. Students are also trained to explain the use of statistics in business and to interpret common statistical information. Students are also trained on customer service strategies, standards and recovery.

On completion of the module, students should be able to infer meanings, feelings and attitudes from listening texts, classify and evaluate information, distinguish arguments for or against an issue, compare and contrast ideas, write formal and informal letters as well as narrative, descriptive and expository compositions, present factual information in a clear and logical manner, and use appropriate vocabulary and expressions in various speech situations.

On completion of the module, students should be able to comprehend narrative texts, write compositions of narrative nature, and communicate effectively and appropriately in speech and writing.
- English Language 'O' II (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to comprehend descriptive texts, write compositions of descriptive nature and communicate effectively and appropriately in speech and writing.
- English Language 'O' III (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to comprehend expository texts, write compositions of expository and persuasive nature, and communicate effectively and appropriately in speech and writing.
- English Language 'O' IV (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to comprehend argumentative texts, write compositions of argumentative nature, and communicate effectively and appropriately in speech and writing.
- Mathematics 'O' I (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to perform arithmetic calculations, manipulate algebraic expressions, construct and interpret geometrical figures and solve investigative problems.
- Mathematics 'O' II (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to manipulate indices, equations and inequalities, perform graphing functions, handle problems on mensuration, interpret and use statistical data and solve investigative problems.
- Mathematics 'O' III (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to solve trigonometrical problems in 2 or 3 dimensions, identify and describe transformations connecting given figures, use vectors and solve investigative problems.
- Mathematics 'O' IV (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to perform arithmetic calculation, algebraic manipulation, graphing functions, geometrical construction and transformation; use vectors and solve problems involving trigonometry, probability and investigation.
- Overseas Experiential Programme (2 to 3 credits)
