Synopsis |
|
On completion of the course, students should be able
to:

Design,
install, inspect, test, operate, maintain
and repair electrical installations up
to 45 kVA and with voltages not exceeding
1,000 volts. |

Apply
safety rules at all times and carry out
electrical work in accordance with the
relevant codes of practice for electrical
installations and other related statutory
requirements. |

Install
and test switchboard panels, electrical
rotating machines and associated control
circuits and equipment. |
 |
Produce electrical installation layout
and single-line diagrams. |
 |
Design and implement
basic PLC programs for industrial monitoring
and control applications. |

Install, maintain and service other electrical

CORE MODULES
- Electrical Principles (8 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to explain the basic principles of electricity, connect electrical circuits, measure and monitor electrical quantities and explain the fundamentals of alternating current electrical supply.
- Electrical Installations (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to install electrical wiring systems in residential premises, commercial and industrial buildings that are in compliance with relevant local standards, regulations and codes of practice.
- Automation & Control (5 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to program a programmable logic controller to carry out simple control operations and industrial automation applications.
- Electric Motors & Maintenance (5 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to inspect, maintain and service electrical motors and design, connect, troubleshoot and rectify faults in motor control circuits including electronic motor starters.
- Electronic Principles (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to connect and test simple digital circuits; check and test electronic components, sensors and transducers commonly found in electrical control circuits and equipment and build a small prototype electronic project.
- Electrical Drives & Machines (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to select, install, maintain and operate electrical rotating machines and electrical drives.
- Power & Telecommunication Installations (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to install, maintain and test electrical switchgears and switchboards; and also to select, install and maintain transformers and operate standby generators, and also understand the application of power factor correction equipment and UPS units. In addition, students are trained to install telephone wiring in compliance with IDA requirements.
- Computer-Aided Design & Drafting (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to design and draw electrical layout drawings and single line diagrams for residential, commercial and industrial electrical installations in accordance with local standards, regulations and code of practice.
- Project (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to work as a team to design, fabricate and commission a project related to their field of study. |

- SCADA (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to explain the basic configuration and provide an overview of a SCADA system. They are also trained to explain the techniques and methods used on data acquisition, the control of the field devices, communication, applications and operation of the system.
- Structured Cabling (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to explain the principles of structured cabling and install a standard cabling system according to the relevant standard. They should also be able to perform testing and troubleshooting and certify the quality of structured cabling installations with both copper and fibre-optic cables.
- Applied Pneumatic Control (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to develop control circuits based on knowledge of the construction, principles of operation and application of the various components and equipment in electrommechanical, pneumatics and electro-pneumatic control systems.
- Power Quality (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to use monitoring tools to measure power quality (PQ) in an electrical power installation. They should also be able to explain the various sources of power quality problems and their mitigation techniques.

On completion of the module, students should be able to use a software application for planning and managing projects.

On completion of the module, students should be able to explain the functions and applications of essential mechanical components and equipment found in an automated product manufacturing factory.
