Entry Requirements
To apply for the Nitec in Hair Fashion & Design course, you must have:

Two GCE 'O' Level Grades (Grades 1 - 8) in any two subjects
Or three GCE 'N' Level Passes (Grades 1 - 5) in English Language and two other subjects

Applicants must undergo pre-course interview and clear a pre-entry medical check-up.

This course comprises full-time campus training and company-based training.

Consideration will be given to applicants with neat appearance and personal hygiene. This is in view of the training and industry requirements.

 
Course Synopsis

On completion of the course, students should be able to:

Handle salon operations.
Provide customer service.
Provide client consultation.
Provide wash and blowdry service.
Provide haircut design and technique.
Process permanent wave.
Perform hairstyling.
Perform hair colouring and bleaching.
Handle hair and scalp treatment.

CORE MODULES

- Hair Salon Operations (5 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to replenish
salon supplies, maintain salon tools and equipment, maintain safety and hygiene in salon, handle accidents and emergency situations, perform general housekeeping and perform basic IT.
- Professionalism and Customer Service (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to conduct
themselves professionally, cultivate customer contact and rapport and perform suggestive and cross selling.
- Shampooing, Treatment and Styling (4 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to shampoo and blowdry hair, diagnose and treat hair and scalp conditions and perform setting and styling of hair.
- Haircutting (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to perform basic blunt, graduated and layered haircuts.
- Hair Colouring (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to perform hair colouring and root and re-growth application.
- Advanced Haircutting (4 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to perform
combination cuts and men’s haircuts.
- Advanced Hair Colouring (5 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to perform
highlighting, lowlighting and toning of hair.
- Hair Perming (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to perform hair perming and hair straigtening.
- Industry Attachment (8 credits)
Students are provided with the opportunity to work with some of the major players in the hairdressing industry on attachment or on projects.

LIFE SKILLS MODULES

- Life Skills for Personal Development (8 credits)
Life skills in broad terms are the foundation skills and personal qualities that an individual can transfer from one job setting to another to manage and adapt to changes in technology and work environments.
- Sports and Wellness I (1 credit)
On completion of the module, students should be able to maintain a fit and healthy body and develop an appreciation of sports and games.
- Sports and Wellness II (1 credit)
On completion of the module, students should be able to maintain a fit and healthy body and develop an appreciation of sports and games.

 

ELECTIVES

Electives (Course Specific)

- Creative Hair Design (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to produce creative hair designs including variations of the chignon and loop for customers, as well as perform hair finishing.
- L'Oreal and Matrix Seminar (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to understand the advanced colouring techniques, colour correction techniques, colour matching techniques, consultation for colours, advanced perming techniques, combination of techniques, advanced cutting techniques that are unique to L'Oreal and Matrix.
- Business Etiquette and Grooming (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to observe proper grooming techniques and apply business etiquette in relating to people.


Electives (Inter-disciplinary)

- Small Business Management (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to identify a significant business opportunity, prepare a promotional package and conduct a sales event for a small business.


Electives (General)

- Elementary Japanese (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to read Japanese in Romanised script and communicate in Japanese using the correct vocabulary, sentence structure, stress intonation, pronunciation when making and responding to enquiries in a bank, travel agency, shop, restaurant and post office.
- Conversational Mandarin (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to listen and
comprehend the Chinese language and engage in simple dialogues
and transactional discourse in a range of common everyday situations using the correct vocabulary, sentence structure, stress intonation and pronunciation.
- Overseas Experiential Programme (2 or 3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to develop leadership qualities, self-confidence, independence, cross-cultural interaction skills and other life skills.
