Entry Requirements

To apply for the Nitec in Product Design course, you need to have:

Either completed GCE 'O' levels
Or completed GCE 'N' levels

Applicant will be tested for colour recognition disability on admission.

Selected applicants have to attend an interview and pass a drawing test. Applicants are expected to possess good drawing and/or sketching abilities.

 
Course Synopsis

On completion of the course, students should be able to:

Conduct feasibility study of product.
Generate concept of product.
Visualise product design through drawing/sketches.
Create 2D and 3D modelling and rendering.
Produce prototype model.
Apply ergonomics in product design.
Apply colour theory on product.

Make client presentation.

CORE MODULES

- Design Exploration (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students have been trained on the fundamental concepts and various media and techniques of drawing as a process of perception and projection. They will learn different drawing techniques from a free hand linear approach to pictorial representation to express their artwork and work with different drawing medium to develop through experience, student’s visual imagination and understanding, and performing freehand sketching of products.
- Conceptualisation (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students have been trained on various techniques in conducting market/competitor research, generating wide range of creative, relevant ideas and design concepts in relation to use of different mediums for the conceptual model.
- Basics of Model Making (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students have been trained on the various techniques of analysing existing products in the market. They are also trained on the selection and preparation of materials appropriate for making the mock up of a design. They will learn to use the appropriate tools and methods to fabricate the mock up, apply the finishing touches to the mock up. They will also learn how to do evaluate of the mock up.
- 2D Visualisation (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students have been trained on the fundamental concepts and techniques of drawing as a process of 2D drafting and rendering. They will learn different drawing methods and processes to colour finish their 2D design and graphics to develop through experience, student’s visual imagination and understanding.
- 3D Visualisation (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students have been trained to produce a 3D model of a product.
- Conceptual Prototyping (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students have been trained to perform computer rendering and 3D animation. They will learn different processes to fabricate and refine prototype model. Students will learn the evaluation process of prototype model.
- Applied Product Design (6 credits)
On completion of the module, students have been trained on the design innovation product ranging electronics and communication devices, industrial devices, home appliances, toys and product packaging to services and marketing concepts.
- Industry Attachment (9 credits)
Students will undergo an On-the-Job Training (OJT) course with product design companies to complement and reinforce the skills and knowledge acquired at ITE and to develop competencies in other specialised areas.


LIFE SKILLS MODULES

- Life Skills for Personal Development (8 credits) and Life Skills at the Workplace (4 credits)
Life skills in broad terms are the foundation skills and personal qualities that an individual can transfer from one job setting to another to manage and adapt to changes in technology and work environments.
- Sports and Wellness I (1 credit)
On completion of the module, students should be able to maintain a fit and healthy body and develop an appreciation of sports and games.
- Sports and Wellness II (1 credit)
On completion of the module, students should be able to maintain a fit and healthy body and develop an appreciation of sports and games.

ELECTIVE MODULES

Electives (Course Specific)

- Product Photography (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students have been trained to create quality digital image for different types of product materials with the use of digital camera and studio tools. Create graphic elements and special effect for the digital images.
- Packaging Design and Branding (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students have been trained to use design principle to develop a branding trademark/logo and packaging design for their new product while working in cooperative group.

Electives (Inter-disciplinary)

- Multimedia Web-based Content Creation (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to create and present effective and creative multimedia web-based contents, emphasizing on proper planning, development and execution.
- IT Fundamentals (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to use word processing and design a presentation using PC and Mac platforms.
- Small Business Management (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to identify a significant business opportunity, prepare a promotional package and conduct a sales event for a small business.

Electives (General)

- Communicative English (Levels 1 to 8) (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to infer meanings, feelings and attitudes from listening texts, classify and evaluate information, distinguish arguments for or against an issue, compare and contrast ideas, write formal and informal letters as well as narrative, descriptive and expository compositions, present factual information in a clear and logical manner, and use appropriate vocabulary and expressions in various speech situations.
- English Language ‘O’ I to IV (2 or 3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to comprehend narrative, descriptive, expository and argumentative texts, write compositions, and communicate effectively and appropriately in speech and writing.
- Mathematics ‘O’ I to IV (2 or 3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to perform arithmetic calculations, manipulate algebraic expressions, construct and interpret geometrical figures, manipulate indices, equations and inequalities, perform graphing functions, handle problems on mensuration, interpret and use statistical data and solve investigative problems.Students are trained to solve trigonometrical problems in 2 or 3 dimensions, identify and describe transformations connecting given figures, use vectors, geometrical construction and transformation and solve problems involving trigonometry, probability and investigation.
- Overseas Experiential Programme (2 to 3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to develop leadership qualities, self-confidence, independence, cross-cultural interaction skills and other life skills.
