Entry Requirements
To apply for the Nitec in Service Skills (Office) course, you must have:

Two GCE 'O' Level Grades (Grades 1 - 8) in any two subjects
Or three GCE 'N' Level Passes (Grades 1 - 5) in English Language and two other subjects
 
Course Synopsis

On completion of the course, students should be able to:

Handle telephone calls.
Draft simple correspondence.
Prepare documents using common software packages.
Maintain databases.
Process office documents.
Manage a filing system.
Manage office supplies.
Process incoming and outgoing mail.
Handle petty cash.
Attend to visitors.
Arrange meetings.
Make travel arrangements.
Organise business events.

Progression Opportunities

Nitec in Service Skills (Office) graduates may apply for progression to a related Higher Nitec courses. After the Higher Nitec course, you can take up a related diploma course at the polytechnic. Alternatively, they may pursue these courses at private training centres which are licensed by ITE as Approved Training Providers.

CORE MODULES

- Office Communication (5 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to handle both oral and simple written communications in an office. The training covers interpretation and analysis of business text and documents, telephone skills, written communication and oral presentation.
- Office Software Applications
(4 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to produce office documents using word processing, database, spreadsheet and presentation software packages.
- Customer Relations
(4 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to cultivate customer contact and rapport, manage their needs and expectations, obtain feedback and handle service breakdown and recovery.
- Principles of Office Administration
(6 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to prepare sales and purchasing documents, process mail, manage a filing system, attend to visitors and arrange meetings and make travel arrangements for an overseas trip.
- Business Event Organisation (4 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to prepare and organise company events.
- Business Etiquette and Grooming (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to observe proper grooming techniques and apply business etiquette in relating to people.

 

LIFE SKILLS MODULES

- Life Skills for Personal Development (8 credits)
Life skills in broad terms are the foundation skills and personal qualities that an individual can transfer from one job setting to another to manage and adapt to changes in technology and work environments.
- Sports and Wellness I (1 credit)
On completion of the module, students should be able to maintain a fit and healthy body and develop an appreciation of sports and games.

- Multimedia and Desktop Publishing (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to use the features of common graphics authoring tools and presentation software to produce captivating and creative publications showcasing an integrated display of animation.

Book-keeping (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to record business transactions and prepare simple final accounts for sole proprietorships.
- Basics of Personal Finance (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to analyse basic financial information needed to choose between financial objectives and compare the consequences of their decisions. On completion of the modules, students would be able to better budget their money, save for the future, and realize their financial objectives.
- Small Business Management (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to identify a significant business opportunity, prepare a promotional package and conduct a sales event for a small business.

- Workplace First Aid and CPR (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to apply basic concepts and principles of first aid to render first aid treatment at the workplace and perform CPR during an emergency.

- Elementary Japanese (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to read Japanese in Romanised script and communicate in Japanese using the correct vocabulary, sentence structure, stress intonation, pronunciation when making and responding to enquiries in a bank, travel agency, shop, restaurant and post office.
- Conversational Mandarin (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to listen and comprehend the Chinese language and engage in simple dialogues and transactional discourse in a range of common everyday situations using the corect vocabulary, sentence structure, stress intonation and pronuciation.
- Mathematics (Level 9) (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to perform arithmetic calculations, interpret and use manipulate algebraic expressions, use graphs and solve simultaneous equations graphically.
- Mathematics (Level 10) (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to calculate angles using the angle properties of a circle; construct and describe transformations and solve trigonometrical problems in 2-diemension.
- Mathematics 'O' I (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to perform arithmetic calculations, manipulate algebraic expressions, construct and interpret geometrical figures and solve investigative problems.
- Mathematics 'O' II (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to manipulate indices, equations, and inequalities, perform graphic functions, handle problems on mensuration, interpret and use statistical data and solve investigative problems.
- English Language 'O' I (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to comprehend narrative texts, write compositions of a narrative nature, as well as communicate effectively and appropriately in speech and writing.
- English Language 'O' II (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to comprehend descriptive texts, write compositions of a descriptive nature and communicate effectively and appropriately in speech and writing.
- Industry Attachment (2 credits)
This module provides opportunities for students to practice the skills and knowledge that they have learnt in school. An on-the-job task list has been developed to guide the companies in providing relevant training to the students.
- Overseas Institution Electives (2 to 4 credits)

On completion of the module, students should be able to develop leadership qualities, self-confidence, independence, cross-cultural interaction skills and other life skills.

- Introduction to Dance Performance (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to perform dance basics. They are introduced to South East Asian dance, contemporary dance and jazz dance.
