To apply for the Nitec
in Service Skills (Retail) course,
you must have:

Two GCE 'O' Level
Grades (Grades 1 - 8) in any two subjects |

Or three GCE 'N' Level Passes
(Grades 1 - 5) in English Language and two other
subjects |
Applicants must attend an interview for admission.
This course comprises full-time campus training and company-based training .

Nitec in Service Skills (Retail) graduates may apply for progression to a related Higher Nitec courses. After the Higher Nitec course, you can take up a related diploma course at the polytechnic. Alternatively, they may pursue these courses at private training centres which are licensed by ITE as Approved Training Providers.

CORE MODULES
- Effective Communication (4 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to handle both oral and simple written communications in an office. The training covers understanding, interpretation and analysis of information, proof-reading, face-to-face interaction, telephone skills, report writing, and oral and listening skills.
- Customer Relations (4 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to provide customer service involving the use of communication skills over the telephone and through face-to-face contact, and to carry out service recovery.
- Selling Skills (4 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to perform sales duties by identifying the needs of customers and applying selling techniques in handling the sales process. The training covers the selling process, sales presentation and closing a sale.
- Retail Operations (5 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to receive, price, store and display merchandise as well as prepare for sales promotion, perform cashiering and handle return and exchange of merchandise in a store outlet.
- Business Etiquette and Grooming (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to observe proper grooming techniques and apply business etiquette in relating to people.
- Office IT (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to produce documents using a common word processing software package, a spreadsheet software package and a presentation software package.
- Industry Attachment (7 credits)
Students will go on a 2-month industry attachment at a retail outlet to gain hands-on practical training in a real work environment. |

- Life Skills for Personal Development (8 credits)
Life skills in broad terms are the foundation skills and personal qualities
that an individual can transfer from one job setting to another to manage
and adapt to changes in technology and work environments.
- Sports and Wellness I (1 credit)
On completion of the module, students should be able to maintain a fit and healthy body and develop an appreciation of sports and games.

On completion of the module, students should be able to analyse basic financial information needed to choose between financial objectives and compare the consequences of their decisions. On completion of the modules, students would be able to better budget their money, save for the future, and realise their financial objectives.

On completion of the module, students should be able to identify a significiant business opportunity, prepare a promotional package and conduct a sales event for a small business.
- Visual Merchandising (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to develop basic visual merchandising skills in executing a visual presentation to enhance a retail store's image, service, and merchandise to its customers. |

- Elementary Japanese (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to read Japanese in Romanisedscript and communicate in Japanese using the correct vocabulary, sentence structure, stress intonation, pronunciation when making and responding to enquiries in a bank, travel agency, shop, restaurant and post office.
- Conversational Mandarin (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to listen and comprehend the Chinese language and engage in simple dialogues and transactional discourse in a range of common everyday situations using the correct vocabulary, sentence structure, stress intonation and pronunciation.
- Mathematics (Level 9) (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to perform arithmetic calculations, interpret and use statistical data, manipulate algebraic expressions, use graphs and solve simultaneous equations graphically.
- Mathematics (Level 10) (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to calculate angles using the angle properties of a circle; construct and describe transformations and solve trigonometrical problems in 2-dimension.
- Mathematics 'O' I (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to perform arithmetic calculations, manipulate algebraic expressions, construct and interpret geometrical figures and solve investigative problems.
- Mathematics 'O' II (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to manipulate indices, equations and inequalities, perform graphic functions, handle problems on mensuration, interpret and use statistical data and solve investigative problems.
- English Language 'O' I (3 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to comprehend narrative texts, write compositions of a narrative nature, as well as communicate effectively and appropriately in speech and writing.
- English Language 'O' II (2 credits)
On completion of the module, students should be able to comprehend descriptive texts, write compositions of a descriptive nature and communicate effectively and appropriately in speech and writing.
- Overseas Experiential Programme (2 to 3 credits)
