The Biggest Misconception - Huh? ITE Has Requirements?!?!

By Ellie Goh

School of Engineering

Have you ever purchased a DVD without reading the system requirements and then went home to discover that not only did your computer not have the correct operating system for the software, but even if it did, you wouldn't have been able to play the disc as your computer was not even equipped with a DVD drive. Bummer huh?

Imagine then, that you are a 4NT student eager to pursue a "science-y" career. You haven't done any research about ITE or the courses available, but you just know you will get a place in something you like. Fast-forward to the end of the year when you attempt to apply for all the Science-related courses, but you find out that you do not meet the entry requirements as you've failed Science. As panic sets in, you wonder, "Why didn't anyone tell me ITE has entry requirements?!"

School of Applied and Health Sciences

Yes indeed, ITE has entry requirements. All your graduating Normal Stream students would have been briefed by us during the Experience ITE Programme, Special Parents' Seminar, campus visits, school talks, Learning Journeys and various other ITE-related activities. They would have been told about the entry requirements, and been given course brochures that contained information about all the ITE courses. However, there will always be that group of students who come to us after obtaining their results, distraught that they couldn't get into their dream course, swearing that they were really paying attention during the talks but were not told about the entry requirements.

We hope that through you, the teachers, we will be able to kill the biggest misconception about ITE there is - that "ITE has no entry requirements whatsoever", and that "anybody, regardless of their results, will be guaranteed a place of their choice". Your help will ensure that correct information will be disseminated to the students, which will lessen the disappointment experienced at the end of the year.

School of Business and Services

Here is a general guideline of the entry requirements for ITE courses.

School of Applied and Health Sciences
All the courses in the School of Applied and Health Sciences require passes in Mathematics and Science, with the Higher Nitec courses having an additional requirement of a pass in English.

School of Business and Services
Graduates from the Business and Services courses will most likely flow into an industry that places a strong emphasis on interpersonal and communication skills. Due to the nature of the jobs in this industry, all the courses in this school require a pass in English, with a handful requiring Mathematics as well.

All Design and Media courses require applicants to attend an interview and pass a drawing test. Furthermore, students interested in the Space Design course will need to pass their Mathematics.

The majority of the Nitec courses in this school requires a pass in Mathematics. For the Higher Nitec courses, passes in English, Mathematics and Science are required.

School of Electronics and Info-Comm Technology

School of Engineering
For the School of Engineering, all Higher Nitec courses stipulate a pass in the subjects English, Mathematics and Science. For the bulk of the Nitec courses, the pre-requisite is a pass in Mathematics.

Once again, these are the general pre-requisites. For the specific entry requirements of the individual courses, please refer to the ITE website or email us for a copy of the ITE course booklet. In fact, if you'd like these entry requirements to be provided to your students, let us know and we'd be happy to send the materials to your school. Last but not least, do contact us to arrange for a school talk for your 4NTs, 4NAs and 5Ns.
