- Joint ITE-NEA Certificate in Food Hygiene for Food Handlers
The Refresher Food Hygiene Course was introduced in October 2010 by the National Environment Agency (NEA) to raise the standard of food hygiene in food establishments.
Certified food handlers are required to undergo the Refresher Food Hygiene Course once every 3 years, to ensure that they still observe good food hygiene practices and are kept up-to-date on NEA’s policies and the best practices in handling food. This would help food handlers avoid committing food hygiene infringements. The requirement for refresher training has been rolled out for the following premises, and will progressively include other categories of licensed premises:
- Caterers
- Restaurants permitted to cater
- Restaurants
- School Canteens
Food handlers working in food establishments who have passed the Basic Food Hygiene Course 3 years or more ago are required to undergo the compulsory refresher training.
Training & Assessment
The Refresher Food Hygiene Course is currently conducted by ITE. The course comprises 3 hours of training followed by a 1 hour assessment.
Assessment Only
From 1 Apr 2012, food handlers may also choose to take the assessment only if they have received regular training on good food hygiene practices in the course of their work.
Eligibility Criteria for Assessment Only
Food handlers are advised to meet the following eligibility criteria before applying for Assessment Only for the Refresher Food Hygiene Course (RFHC):
- Minimum Primary 6 Education
- Able to read and understand English/Chinese/Malay
- Basic computer literacy (applicable for online assessment only)
Food handlers who opted for Assessment Only and fail their first attempt are required to undergo the Refresher Food Hygiene Course at ITE. Food handlers who fail the assessment after 2 attempts would be required to undergo the WSQ Follow Food & Beverage Safety and Hygiene Policies and Procedures course.
NEA has published a handbook for food handlers, containing information on how to prepare and handle food safely and to maintain the cleanliness of the licensed premises. The handbook can be downloaded here. For more information, please email us at itp@ite.edu.sg.
Certification
A Joint ITE-NEA Certificate of Achievement (COA) in Food Hygiene for Food Handlers is issued if a food handler passes the assessment.
