Modern passenger and commercial vehicles are equipped with a series of on-board computers which enables them to operate more efficiently. Skilled specialists are needed to maintain and repair these vehicles.

In this course, students will acquire the skills and knowledge to perform a range of tasks involving the servicing, inspection, repair and diagnosis of systems for petrol and diesel vehicles. The work includes inspection and servicing to mechanical and electrical systems analysis using diagnostic equipment.

What you'll learn

Maintain, service, repair and troubleshoot systems in passenger and commercial vehicles such as: 

  • Maintain engine mechanical and management systems
  • Service emission control systems
  • Maintain air intake system
  • Service suspension and steering systems
  • Maintain brake system
  • Maintain drivetrain system
  • Repair electrical and electronic systems
  • Service air-conditioning system
  • Maintain supplemental restraint system  

Entry Requirements

Complete GCE 'N' or 'O' Level

Note: Applicants for this course must ensure that they are free from colour appreciation deficiency.

Progression Opportunities

Nitec in Automotive Technology graduates with a minimum GPA of 2.0 may apply for progression to the following Work-Study Diploma courses at ITE:

Nitec in Automotive Technology graduates with a GPA of 3.5 and above may apply for progression to the first year of a related diploma course at the Polytechnics. For more details on diploma courses for progression, please refer to the Joint Polytechnic Admissions website

Nitec in Automotive Technology graduates with a GPA of 3.0 and above may apply for progression to a related Technical Engineer Diploma course at ITE.

Nitec in Automotive Technology graduates with a GPA of 2.3 and above may also apply for progression to related Higher Nitec courses offered by ITE.

Nitec in Automotive Technology graduates are employed by fleet maintenance workshops, public transport companies, distributors of passenger and commercial vehicles, service garages, franchised motor dealers, vehicle inspection centres, service garages and government agencies. 

Some of the job titles held by graduates include Truck or Bus Service Technician, Diesel Engine Service Technician, Motor Vehicle Service Technician, Service Adviser and Vehicle Inspector. There are excellent opportunities for career advancement to supervisory positions and beyond.
