Acquire the skills to sew your own clothes, starting with the basic A-line skirt. Learn the basic techniques of taking body measurements, drawing paper patterns, cutting the fabric and sewing the basic pencil A-line skirt.

What you'll learn

Tools and equipment needed for drafting and sewing

Choose suitable fabrics for making skirts

Take body measurements

Draft a basic skirt using your own measurements

Create intermediate and final patterns for A-line skirt and lining

Lay out patterns on shell fabric according to grain line and cut out shell fabric according to the lay plan.

Lay out patterns on lining fabrics according to grain line and cut out lining fabric according to the lay plan

Cut out interfacing for the waistband and fuse it onto the waistband fabric

Thread the industrial sewing machine and practice sewing straight and curve lines with it

Thread and practise on the overlocking sewing machine

Sew front and back darts of shell and lining fabrics

Attach zipper to lining fabric and to shell fabric (with lining)

Join side seams of shell and lining fabrics

Overlock side seams of shell and lining fabrics and attach waistband to skirt

Sew hem of shell and lining fabrics
