Course Overview


Are you interested to be part of the Marine industry, and ensure the smooth sailing of ships, vessels and offshore structures?

You will learn how to provide technical support and supervise fabrication, repair and refurbishment activities of all types of vessels and offshore structures in the marine and offshore industry.

Apply your knowledge and gain real-life (on-the-job) training at production facilities within shipyards.

Acquire knowledge and skills which are highly relevant to the industry

  • Interpret general arrangement drawings, pipe and instrument drawings, welding procedure specifications, and test procedures.
  • Perform preliminary design of pipe routing plan.
  • Perform non-destructive tests on weld metals.
  • Perform inspection on brazed joints, pre-welding and post-welding, and alignment of pumps.
  • Assist in system testing and commissioning of marine auxiliary system and drilling system.
  • Perform planning of work activities such as lifting, erection of supports for assembly works, manpower deployment and work schedule.
  • Perform supervision on fabrication and welding.
  • Perform quality control checks of welding, painting and blasting, insulation, and machinery and electrical installations.

 

Entry Requirements


To apply for the Higher Nitec in Marine & Offshore Technology course, you need to have:
 

Subject Grade
GCE 'O' level grades in English Language,
Mathematics and 1 approved subject
  • Grade 1 - 8 in English Language
  • Grade 1 - 7 in Mathematics
    (Elementary or Additional)
  • Grade 1 - 8 in an approved subject:

[Biology / Biotechnology / Chemistry / Combined Science / Computer Studies / Design & Technology / Engineering Science / Fundamentals of Electronics / Integrated Science / Physical Science / Physics / Science (Chemistry, Biology) / Science (Physics, Biology) / Science (Physics, Chemistry) / Science (Physics, Biology, Chemistry)]

One of the following Nitec qualifications:

  • Nitec in Fabrication Technology
    (Marine Pipe)
  • Nitec in Fabrication Technology
    (Hull & Structures)
  • Nitec in Welding
  • Nitec in Marine Technology
  • Nitec in Marine Electrical Technology
  • Nitec in Automotive Technology
    (Light Vehicles)
  • Nitec in Automotive Technology
    (Heavy Vehicles)
  • Nitec in Facility Technology
  • Nitec in Mechanical Technology
  • Nitec in Precision Engineering
      GPA of 2.3 and above


 

Duration and Venue


This is a two-year course and training is available at ITE Approved Training Centres.

 

Progression Opportunities


Higher Nitec in Marine & Offshore Technology graduates with good results may apply for progression to the first year of a related diploma course at the Polytechnics.

Higher Nitec in Marine & Offshore Technology graduates may apply for progression to related ITE Work-Study Diploma (previously known as Work-Learn Technical Diploma). For more details, please click here.

 

Career Prospects


Higher Nitec in Marine & Offshore Technology graduates are employed by shipyards, and other supporting companies which provide services relating to repair, fabrication, refurbishment activities of all types of vessels, offshore structures in the marine and offshore industry. Some of the job titles held by graduates include Assistant Supervisor, 
Trainee Supervisor, Assistant Marine Supervisor and Foreman.

There are excellent opportunities for career advancement to supervisory positions and beyond. The challenge is for students to upgrade their technical skills and knowledge by taking up higher-level courses.
