Sng Yew Chong Gold Medal 2013 - Tan Kian How

                                      A Natural Humanitarian

“I cannot describe the feeling when someone says a simple ‘thank you’, or smiles widely because of what I have done”, said Tan Kian How, an avid volunteer since his secondary school days.  Bringing joy to others is a motivation for Kian How whose commitment towards championing community projects is admirable.

An inspiration was his favourite movie,
Machine Gun Preacher, a movie about a tough guy who saves thousands of Sundanese children. Like the hero in the movie, he hopes that his work will change lives. “I have made a personal commitment to dedicate my time to serve others and hope that others will follow my footsteps to do the same”, he shared.
A natural humanitarian, Kian How is open to reaching out to all local and overseas communities. He was an active leader of the ITE-Civil Defence Lionhearter Club, and led his team in humanitarian missions and emergency work, including organising a fund-raising cyclothon during the severe flooding in Cambodia and Thailand. He even ventured overseas to participate in the Overseas Humanitarian Rebuilding Project at Padang Pariaman, Indonesia, in September 2012.

At home, he helped raise funds for the Spastic Children’s Association of Singapore and for the upgrading of the Hajjah Rahimabi Kebun Limau Mosque. Currently, he volunteers at the Institute of Mental Health, where he provides peer support to youths facing mental challenges in the Institute’s Early Psychosis Intervention Programme.

Kian How’s story is one to share as he, in fact, suffers from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Despite his personal challenges,
the resilient go-getter has balanced work and after-school activities well to get the maximum Grade Point Average, and has displayed exemplary leadership qualities.

He aims to be his family’s pride by getting a degree after he completes his Diploma in Sustainable Urban Design and Engineering at Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

Yes sir, you will definitely be!
