Student Council (SC) has given me the opportunity to lead not only on an event level, but as the president of the student council. It has open my eyes to understand the different needs and working styles people have when leading.

I found myself developing from a follower to a confident leader, through the many events like Annual Council Sports Meet, where I was first appointed as the Overall i/c. Being given such a large role as a member was quite stressful, but I managed to pull through and it was fun creating a Sports day for the whole council.

Being in Student Council has made me more open minded and it has helped me to understand others better and to be more comfortable working with others

I have built the confidence to speak to anyone in public and be more people oriented compared to being more focused on myself or on the task or the process.

I also got to truly understand the need for a family, and what this means as part of a council.

I used to not understand the meaning of TEAM till working with my Exco's in SC. Before joining SC, I thought a team just meant - spreading and dividing the work load, so it was not so stressful for one person.

However, I found that it means ‘Together, Every, Action, Matters’.

Being in Urban Central Statements (UCS) kicked start my passion in dance and allowed me to take risks with challenging myself in choreographing for events/competitions. even on a National platform like Super24. I feel like it built my foundation in evolving my choice of movements, when I now choreograph for classes.

I was inspired to teach by my coaches Muhd Zaihar and Ah Lee from O School. The opportunity to choreography items for shows like CCA Roadshow and ITE Emblazon sparked my interest to teach as part of my career.

Leading UCS has definitely helped me learn to better engage with my peers and has given me a good platform to learn from others and share my craft to my members. I carry this attitude with me now to share with the world what I’m passionate about - Dance!

Student Council and the Community Service Club played a huge part in shaping me into the person I am today. This is also when I found my passion in serving the community as I was often involved in community service work. When I was interacting with the elderly, I felt more open in communicating with others and I can just talk freely. I realized after a few visits to various Senior Activity Centre (e.g. Lion Befrienders and AWWA), the elderly just want someone to talk to and do some activities together them.

Being appointed the President of Student Councilallowed me to step out of my comfort zone and greatly boosted my leadership and engagement skills. I realized by being a leader, I can do so much more for the community. I was further inspired by successful peers and grassroots leaders I met in my second year of Higher Nitec, to join the Youth Network (YN) at Yio Chu Kang Community Centre. Engaging in YN activities gives me a great sense of fulfilment and motivates me as I continue to lead and serve as Chairman the team.
