Factsheet - ITE Launches eSports Centre at College Central

To bring “sports to all”, ITE will be launching the eSports Centre, a multi-functional facility designed to provide a conducive environment for students to compete on a level playing field with their peers beyond physical sports. The new facility will open doors for all students to be able to participate in sports competitively, regardless of physical limitations like age and gender; and restrictions like location, venue and weather.

In conjunction with the launch of the new Centre, ITE will also roll out community-based eSports programmes and workshops as part of its outreach efforts to engage seniors living in Yio Chu Kang. It will be the first Institute of Higher Learning (IHL) to promote eSports through programmes and workshops designed to foster intergenerational understanding and social bonding between students and seniors.

Guest-of-Honour, Member of Parliament and Advisor to Yio Chu Kang SMC, Mr Yip Hon Weng will officiate the opening of the new facility at ITE College Central.

Holistic Learning and Development

At the Centre, students will get to participate in eSports through a comprehensive four-hour programme offered under a compulsory Sports & Wellness module. The programme which was developed together with Singapore Cybersports and Online Gaming Association (SCOGA) will enable students to hone their communication skills, teamwork and strategic thinking, as well as deepen their knowledge in professional skills areas such as event planning, games development and digital content creation. Through the partnership with SCOGA, ITE hopes to educate and encourage more students to consider eSports as a viable career option.

The Centre will also house the College eSports CCA Club where students train to compete with players from other IHLs through the prestigious annual tournament “Campus Legends”, as well as spar with overseas gamers on international platforms and competitions.

Intergenerational Bonding with Seniors

In addition, students from the College eSports CCA Club will be roped in to help out in eSports programmes and workshops that will be conducted on a regular basis for seniors living in Yio Chu Kang. This comes under a collaboration with the Yio Chu Kang Community Sports Club (CSC) where students will have opportunities to mingle and interact with seniors who would in turn, be able to benefit from eSports programmes designed to improve and strengthen their cognition and physical functions, such as mental resilience, visual acuity, hand-eye coordination and reaction time.
