Fostering Collaboration for an Inclusive, Innovative and Sustainable Future

The ISS 224 kicked off today, 26 June 2024, marking a significant milestone in the partnership between the Vocational Training Council (VTC), Hong Kong, and the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), Singapore. The Opening Ceremony, held in Hong Kong, saw some 620 participants convening to delve into this year's theme: "ISS Youth Change Makers."

The partnership between VTC and ITE, which commenced in 1998, has evolved into a robust collaboration encompassing knowledge sharing, staff and student exchanges, and the joint development of new Technical Diplomas. The ISS serves as a testament to this enduring collaboration, providing a platform for students from VTC, ITE, and other participating institutions to deliberate on pressing global issues and present solutions.

Darwish Irfan Shah Bin Mohamad Nor Aizan, a student participant from ITE College East, shared his excitement: "I feel honoured and grateful for the opportunity to participate in the seminar in Hong Kong. I look forward to gaining valuable insights from the creativity and innovative work showcased by other groups and learning new ideas through cultural exchanges and interactions with like-minded youth. This experience will broaden my perspective, boost my skills, and inspire me to make a real difference in my community."

Sparks of Innovation

At the seminar, ITE participants will present smart solutions to address key sub-themes: Innovation, Sustainability and Social Impact.

1. INNOVATION: SIGNAL OF CHANGE: NEXT-GEN TRAFFIC LIGHTS FOR A MORE INCLUSIVE SOCIETYThis project aims to recommend solutions for safe and accessible crossings for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) using smart traffic lights. The ITE project team has designed an intelligent traffic light system that uses camera-based object detection and AI-powered time extension to enhance crossing safety for individuals with mobility conditions. By deploying real-time monitoring and adaptive signal timing, this solution ensures a safer and more inclusive pedestrian experience.

2. SUSTAINABILITY: CHILL BREW – COFFEE CAPSULE BUDDYFocusing on the thriving coffee market and the increasing popularity of artisanal coffee, this initiative aims to educate and illustrate the economic and environmental advantages of repurposing coffee grounds. Leveraging advanced 3D printing technology, the project team has developed innovative tools to facilitate the upcycling of coffee capsules and grounds; repurpose used coffee grounds as natural odour neutralisers, hands scrubs, and natural fertilisers. The coffee capsules are also turned into little art pieces!

3. SOCIAL IMPACT: MINDSCAPES

Designed to foster an emotionally safe environment, our board game, available in both physical and digital editions, empowers students to freely share their experiences and emotions. Seamlessly integrating gameplay with real-life scenarios, the game facilitates meaningful dialogues while equipping participants with essential coping strategies. Our vision is to transform mental health education into a dynamic experience that promotes resilience and empathy among students.

As the Seminar unfolds over the next three days, participants will be engaged in meaningful exchanges, fostering mutual understanding, and cultivating a spirit of innovation.

The Seminar’s Closing Ceremony will be held on 28 June 2024 at the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) in Tseung Kwan O, Hong Kong and officiated by Mr Victor Hui, Deputy Consul-General of Singapore in Hong Kong.
