News Release - Singapore Repeats Best Showing in 11th ASEAN Skills Competition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Team Singapore, represented by 36 ITE students, won a total of 19 Awards – 3 Golds, 1 Silver, 7 Bronzes and 8 Medallions for Excellence, repeating best performance two years ago

Team Singapore, comprising a record 36 ITE competitors, performed well at the 11^th ASEAN Skills Competition, against more than 200 competitors from nine other ASEAN countries. Held from 24 to 26 September 2016 in Kuala Lumpur, the ASEAN Skills Competition (ASC) is the biggest skills education and excellence event held in the ASEAN region once every two years. 

2 The Singapore contingent, comprising only ITE students, won a total of 19 Awards - 3 Golds, 1 Silver, 7 Bronzes, and 8 Medallions for Excellence. With the results, Singapore ranked  5^th in the medal tally, equaled the achievements at the last ASC in Hanoi, Vietnam, two years ago, where Team Singapore secured

19 Awards as well.  

3 This year, Team Singapore competed in 18 of the 25 skills areas (see Annex A for full list of skills areas Team Singapore participated in). This is the most number of areas that Singapore has participated in since its first ASC involvement in 2008. Of these skills areas, Automobile Technology and Aircraft Maintenance (Demo^[1]) are two areas in which the team is participating for the first time. Singapore’s medals were won in the following areas:

Singapore Performs at Highly Competitive Skills Competition

5 This is the fifth time that Singapore is participating in the ASC. The performance this year is very encouraging. “Participation in the ASEAN Skills

Competition, and Team Singapore’s achievements, remind us of the value of skills development in Singapore. Many of the ASEAN neighbours view vocational and technical education and excellence in skills as a key competitive advantage for their nations’ social and economic development. Likewise, we need to encourage our talented young people to pursue careers in skills. Our Competitors have learnt a lot through this Competition, and benchmarking their skills with youths in the region. Team Singapore has achieved good results, considering that many of the ASEAN competitors are university students.” said Mr Heng Guan Teck, Singapore’s Official Delegate to ASEAN Skills Competition
