Our eyes are the windows to the world.
As an Optician (eyecare practitioner), you will learn to test a person's vision, measure spectacle prescriptions and take various ocular measurements in order to fit a pair of glasses. This course will teach you to cut ophthalmic lenses and fit them into frames to make spectacles. An Optician is also trained to recommend the correct type of lenses and frames, to suit a person's visual needs, style and facial shape.
What you'll learn
Perform administrative duties in ophthalmic practice
Provide customer service in ophthalmic practice
Test client eyesight
Prepare work orders for optical laboratory
Perform lens edging
Dispense optical aids
Maintain ophthalmic equipment

Entry requirements
GCE 'O' level passes in English Language, Mathematics and 1 approved subject:
Grade 1-8 in English Language
Grade 1-7 in Mathematics (Elementary or Additional)
Grade 1-8 in an approved subject: [Biology / Biotechnology / Chemistry / Combined Science / Human & Social Biology / Integrated Science / Physics / Engineering Science / Science (Chemistry, Biology) / Science (Physics, Biology) / Science (Physics, Chemistry) / Physical Science / Science (Physics, Biology, Chemistry)]

Progression opportunities
Higher Nitec in Opticianry graduates may apply for progression to the following Work-Study Diploma courses at ITE:

Career opportunities
The Higher Nitec in Opticianry course, once accredited by the Optometrists & Opticians Board (OOB), graduates can be employed as Opticians in a variety of settings, such as optical retail stores, independent or joint eye care practices, hospitals or optical laboratories.
