Occupational Traits and Functional Ability Requirements
Nature of work and functional abilities
Nature of Work | Functional Abilities |
---|---|
As Mechanical Engineering Assistants, they are required to carry out technical support functions in mechanical engineering design and operations, perform fault diagnosis, maintenance of control equipment, integration of mechanical components and sub-systems as well as carry out work improvement activities to enhance production operations. | |
Computer skills form a large part of the work required in mechanical engineering employment. In addition to the standard office productivity tools, there is a range of specialized software such as computer assisted design (CAD), simulation software, statistical process control (SPC), and others, which they would need to use. | Finger dexterity, attentive, sensory (visual) ability |
They would be required to work on high-cost and high-precision equipment, such as in CNC machining, which needs them to possess full functional ability so that they can readily react to work requirements and especially in unsafe situation. | Physical mobility, hand and finger dexterity, sensory (sight & hearing), ability to react quickly, attentiveness to safety |
They are required to carry out work assignments based on verbal or written instructions as well as document data, findings or technical issues in the course of their work. They may have to liaise with workers in other departments or people outside the company to carry out their job duties. They may work independently or as a team. | Communication skills, interaction with strangers, dealing with non- routine assignments and schedule |
This course is less suitable for students who do not possess the functional abilities indicated. If in doubt, please consult your school career guidance officer or visit ITE College for further academic advising.
