Background

Intel® AI For Citizens is a new programme by Intel, developed as part of the Intel 2030 RISE strategy to make technology inclusive and expand digital readiness.

Intel has chosen Singapore to be the launch pad for the global roll-out of the programme, and ITE will be the first in the world to partner Intel on this programme that will benefit citizens on the learning of Artificial Intelligence (AI) nation-wide.

The official launch event will take place on Tue 16 Mar 2021, 9am, at ITE College West. (Please refer to Annex A for the launch programme.)

About AI For Citizens

AI For Citizens is a self-directed, self-paced, open content resource offered to governments to create AI awareness and demystify AI for the general public and community. The programme is designed for people from all walks of life – students, stay-at-home parents, professionals in any field, senior citizens, etc. No prior knowledge or experience in AI is required for this programme.

In Singapore, this programme will be conducted via ITE’s Gnowbe MLC (Micro-Learning Courses) platform. Anyone interested in getting acquainted with AI can sign up for this free online programme on ITE-Gnowbe MLC[1] <https://tinyurl.com/ITE-IntelAIForCitizens> starting from 16 Mar 2021, and learn at their own pace.

There are two parts to the programme:

(1)  AI Awareness..

Build elementary understanding of AI, misconceptions around AI and its application potentials.

(2)  AI Appreciation..

Get introductory knowledge of the common domains of AI and its related issues, and start building personal learning plans.

It takes about four hours to complete the course. Participants will attain Intel digital badges after they have completed their AI Aware and AI appreciation modules.

Participants who have completed the programme and are keen to explore further AI topics can consider signing up for a range of SkillsFuture Certificate of Competency (CoC) courses under ITE’s Continuing Education & Training (CET) umbrella.

Showcase of ITE Students’ Social Impact AI Projects

On 21 Jan 2020, ITE and Intel signed a Letter of Collaboration and launched the Intel® AI For Youth programme. Intel® AI For Youth is a comprehensive AI readiness programme that empowers youth to gain AI technology and social skills in inclusive ways, preparing them for the ever-changing digital world. Some 3,165 ITE students have completed the programme since then. Among them, 15 students went further and and developed exemplary social impact AI projects and have achieved the Intel Certificate of Accomplishment. These 15 students are also recognised by Intel as AI For Youth Student Mentors and can wear the special AI For Youth Student Mentor jacket.

Eight of these social impact projects will be showcased during the event at ITE College West, including Cruzr AI Ambassador – a robot concierge to welcome guests/customers and introduce products/services, Smart AI Sign Language – a proof of concept that recognises hand gestures using AI Machine Learning, mimicking translation from sign gestures to text and speech; and Intel OpenBot – an Intel Labs research project to turn smartphones into robots. The list of projects can be found in Annex B.
