To enhance training for students in microelectronics manufacturing, the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) has launched a revamped Microelectronics Training Centre at ITE College Central.
The facility was symbolically launched at the Electronics Industry Seminar and Career Fair at ITE College Central today, by Mr Desmond Tan, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office and Deputy Secretary-General of the National Trade Union Congress. Jointly organised by ITE and e2i (Employment and Employability Institute), the event featured industry speakers and a career fair for students, which served to attract students to join Singapore’s semiconductor industry. Details on the programme can be found in Annex A.
Microelectronics Training Centre
Designed to simulate a semiconductor manufacturing environment, the 700m2 Microelectronics Training Centre is equipped with a wide range of semiconductor processing equipment and metrology tools for wafer fabrication and assembly. It also features clean rooms, which are necessary for the various production processes.
With the revamp, all of its machinery have been integrated with smart manufacturing technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), data analytics, and robotics.
At the facility, students from ITE’s Electronics-related courses will be trained to use such technologies to monitor microelectronics manufacturing processes, as well as perform troubleshooting and maintenance of machinery. These courses include the Higher Nitec in Electronics Engineering, the Work-Study Diploma in Microelectronics, and the Work-Study Diploma in IoT and Data Engineering.
The Microelectronics Training Centre supports the training of more than 120 full-time Higher Nitec students and 90 Work-Study Diploma trainees per year. It is open for visits by the industry and secondary schools, with the latter serving to engage the interest of youths in pursuing the field of Microelectronics.
Renewed Industry Partnerships
At the event, ITE also renewed its partnerships with semiconductor manufacturing companies, (i) STMicroelectronics and (ii) Systems on Silicon Manufacturing Company (SSMC).
First established in 2016, these partnerships were renewed for another three years. They aim to train and attract skilled youths to join the semiconductor industry.
The scope of collaboration includes the provision of internship opportunities for ITE students, recruitment of ITE graduates through the Work-Study Diploma programme, and support for ITE’s electronics curriculum development. In addition, the partnering companies will be supporting the capability development of ITE staff through joint industry projects and knowledge sharing.
