Press Release - ITE Rolls Out Three New Nitec Courses in January 2020

News details
  • Publish date:18 Dec 2019

GCE ‘N’ and ‘O’ school leavers with a keen interest and aptitude in loT and Electronics will have something to cheer about. Driven by strong demands set paced by the Smart Nation agenda, and the need to attract secondary school leavers to take up careers in the sector, ITE will be implementing the new Nitec in Electronics & IoT course to nurture young talents in the related field. In addition, ITE will also be offering a new Nitec in Business Administration course and the revised Nitec in Automotive Technology course, come January 2020.

Supporting the Vision of Singapore’s Smart Nation Initiative

Officially launched in 2014 by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Singapore’s Smart Nation initiative envisaged an economically competitive global city and a livable home for all its citizens. It is a whole-of-nation movement to harness infocomm technologies, networks and big data to create tech-enabled solutions for everyday living. ITE’s new Nitec in Electronics & Internet of Things (loT) aims to produce loT System Technicians with the capability to install, configure, maintain and monitor loT devices and systems to meet the needs of the growing industry. Upon completion of the programme, ITE graduates can look forward to employment opportunities in the Service, Logistics, Healthcare and Transport sectors in professional capacities such as loT System Technician, loT Specialist, Computer Systems Technician, Engineering Assistant and Network Support Technician.

Mr George Peng, General Manager of Mitsubishi Electric Asia, is in full support of the new course.  He said, “It is definitely timely in view of the increasing demands for household devices that can be conveniently accessed or controlled while the user is away from home. Mitsubishi Electric Asia is looking forward to having such graduates to support our industry as we are constantly looking for skilled personnel to develop and maintain such systems.”

Acing Business Administration in an Evolving Environment

ITE is constantly engaging our industry partners and practitioners to ensure that courses and training stay relevant and attuned to changing industry needs.  Following feedback from the industry, ITE will also be offering a new Nitec in Business Administration course to encompass the requirements and skill sets needed of an Administrative Assistant to support business operations across all sectors and industries. Students will learn to perform office executive job functions, process and analyse business trends. Of special interest would be the inclusion of developing skills in Data Analytics and Social Media to aid the strategic operation of any business entity in this new digital age economy.

Upon completion of the course, graduates may be employed in a wide range of sectors and industries in various professional capacity, such as Business Administration Executive, Operations Executive, Human Resources Assistant, Account Assistant and Customer Service Representative.

Consolidation of Courses for Broad Skills Set

To provide a more broad-based training in Automotive Technology at the Nitec level, our current Nitec in Automotive Technology (Heavy Vehicles) and Nitec in Automotive Technology (Light Vehicles) will be consolidated into a single course. The revised Nitec in Automotive Technology course will give students more opportunities to gain broad skills set before pursuing a specific area of specialisation, either in Heavy or Light vehicles, as well as enjoy higher employability and mobility in the automotive industry.

More information on the new Nitec courses can be found in Annex A.

ITE will be offering 44 Nitec courses, 50 Higher Nitec courses, and 24 Traineeship courses in 2020. Details on the full-time Nitec courses for 2020 and their entry requirements are listed in Annex B.

Direct Entry Scheme to Polytechnic Programme (DPP)

GCE Normal (Academic) students who aspire to obtain a polytechnic diploma may pursue direct entry into polytechnic diploma courses through the DPP. Under the DPP, students who successfully complete their Higher Nitec course and attain the required minimum qualifying raw Higher Nitec Grade Point Average score will be guaranteed a place in one of the polytechnic courses mapped to their Higher Nitec course. Only Secondary 4 Normal (Academic) students who sat for the GCE ‘N’ Level examinations in 2019 will be considered for application to the DPP 2020 intake. The list of Higher Nitec courses offered under DPP and the minimum entry requirements are in Annex C.

Application Procedures

Besides full-time courses, students can also apply for the ITE Traineeship Scheme, which allows trainees to “earn-as-you-learn” in a sponsoring company. It provides them with on-the-job skills training and leads towards nationally-recognised ITE certifications. The list of Traineeship courses offered by ITE and the minimum entry requirements are in Annex D.
