The Work-Study Diploma in Electrical Engineering adopts a work-study approach to prepare you for a professional career in the Engineering Services sector.

You will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to design, install, maintain, repair, inspect, test, operate and supervise electrical installations and systems in accordance with engineering specifications as well as codes of practice and regulations.

Prerequisite:

Physical Attributes of an Assistant Electrical Engineer

He/she needs to be physically fit to reach out to the electrical components for maintenance which is normally located at an out of reach position. He/she needs to be colour deficiency free as reading electrical colour code is a daily composition of the job.

Social Attributes of an Assistant Electrical Engineer

He/She is required to be quick witted and responds to emergency in a quick a calm manner. He/she needs to possess social ethics and discharge their duties professionally in accordance to the codes and standards. Engineers are often required to work beyond normal office hours as that is the time for routine and corrective maintenance of the system. 

Job Role:

An Assistant Electrical Engineer / Technical Officer is one who designs, installs, maintains, repairs, inspects, operates, tests and supervises electrical installations and systems in accordance with engineering specifications, codes of practice and regulations.

The Assistant Electrical Engineer supervises the operations, testing, monitoring, installation, troubleshooting and repair of electricity transmission or distribution equipment, auxiliaries, energy storage, control systems and substations. This includes condition monitoring, preventive and predictive maintenance of equipment, and major cable diversion works to allow equipment and cable fault repair works to be carried out. He/She recommends mitigating measures based on his review of disturbance event reports to prevent future occurrences from happening. He/she also manages the communication networks in the power quality monitoring system to ensure smooth transmission of information. The promotion of clean energy usage has prompted electrical engineers to be well versed in solar photovoltaic system and electric vehicle charger setup. The clean energy usage wave has pushed for the need for engineers to maintain steady and reliable solar power supply source and commission safe user friendly electric vehicle charging station.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum entry requirements:

  1. ITE graduates from any one of the following courses:

    Nitec with GPA ≥ 2:

    • Aerospace Avionics
    • Electrical Technology (Lighting & Sound)
    • Electrical Technology (Power & Control)
    • Electronics, Computer Networking & Communications

    Higher Nitec:

    • Electrical Engineering
    • Electronic Engineering

    OR

    In-service employees with:

    • Equivalent qualifications such as Workplace Literacy & Numeracy (WPLN) Level 5 and above
    • Relevant work experience
    • Strong employer endorsement
  2. Free from colour appreciation deficiency
  3. Pass company screening and interview

Progression Opportunities

Work-Study Diploma graduates can apply to related full-time or part-time degree programmes in Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) or Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), subject to the admission requirements of the university.

The holder of Work-Study Diploma in Electrical Engineering conferred by the Institute of Technical Education will be eligible to apply for a license as an Electrical Technician from Energy Market Authority after acquiring not less than 2 years' practical experience relevant to the electrical work to be performed by a licensed electrical technician.
