Ever wonder what is the size of a ship engine and how much power can be generated? How does an engine as high as a four-storey building, churning out in excess of 100,000 horse power sound to you?

This diploma course prepares you for a professional career in the Marine & Offshore sector. Through the Engineering Design specialisation, you will be equipped with the skills and knowledge in the design of ships and marine systems, while the Production (Repair & Maintenance) specialisation will equip you with skills and knowledge in the repair and maintenance of ships and various marine systems.

Prerequisite:

Is a good team player and is able to manage and work with different people in various levels in the organisation from different background, has initiative and troubleshooting skills with logical thinking. Trainees must be able to work long hours and must meet tight project deadlines.

Job Role:

Assistant Engineer assists project teams in different aspects of design and engineering activities of marine and offshore structures and teams in different aspects of the repair, conversion and building of marine and offshore structures, including the mechanical, structural, piping, electrical, heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and other marine systems.

He/She assists project teams in carrying out routine tasks in different aspects of the ship and offshore engineering design in compliance with the ship owners’ and manufacturers’ specifications, classification societies’ and statutory requirements, where applicable, using computer software to ensure that the needs of the clients, authorities, consultants at the different stages of the project are met.

His/her duties will require working on site and on board vessels to carry out supervision of production work in compliance with safety and quality standards, owners’ and manufacturers’ specifications, classification societies’ requirements, and organisational procedures, so that the project is successfully delivered safely and timely.

What you'll learn

  • Perform system design calculations

  • Translate hand sketches and tracing drawings into technical drawings
  • Ensure compliance to shipyard’s health, safety and environment management practices
  • Perform engineering design calculations involving marine offshore structures, equipment and systems

Applicants must meet the following minimum entry requirements:

  1. ITE graduates from any one of the following courses:

Progression Opportunities

Work-Study Diploma graduates can apply to related full-time or part-time degree programmes in Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) or Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), subject to the admission requirements of the university.
