Every day, more than 2 million commuters zip around in Singapore in the Mass Rapid Transit. Like the arteries in our bodies, any disruptions in the rail system will result in costly consequences.

Jointly developed by SMRT Institute and the ITE, the Nitec in Rapid Transit Technology course provides you with a robust foundation in railway engineering. You will also learn the fundamental skills and knowledge in areas such as Rapid Transit Systems and Operations, Automation and Control Systems, as well as Electronics Systems and Equipment.

  • Inspect railway subsystems and facilities
  • Maintain railway electrical and electronics systems
  • Maintain railway mechanical and pneumatic systems
  • Maintain rolling stock systems
  • Maintain permanent way and tracks

Entry Requirements

GCE ‘O’ level grades in any 2 subjects:

  • Grade 1-8


GCE ‘N’ level passes in Mathematics or Science* and 2 other subjects:

  • Grade A-D or Grade 1-5

* Mobile Robotics and Smart Electrical Technology subjects can be used in lieu of Science for admission to this Nitec course.

Note: Applicants for this course must ensure that they are free from colour appreciation deficiency.

Progression Opportunities

Nitec in Rapid Transit Technology graduates with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.5 and above may apply for progression to the first year of a related diploma course at the Polytechnics. For more details on diploma courses for progression, please refer to the Joint Polytechnic Admissions website.

Nitec in Rapid Transit Technology graduates with a GPA of 3.0 and above may apply for progression to a related Technical Engineer Diploma course at ITE.

Nitec in Rapid Transit Technology graduates with a GPA of 2.3 and above may also apply for progression to related Higher Nitec courses offered by ITE. For more information on progression, please click here.

Career Opportunities

Nitec in Rapid Transit Technology graduates are employed by mass rapid transit operators, Government transport planning agencies as well as companies in the rail equipment industry. Some of the job titles that are held by graduates include Rapid Transit Technical Officer, Trains and Rolling Stock Technician and Permanent Way Field Services Technician.

There are excellent opportunities for career advancement to supervisory positions and beyond. The challenge is for students to upgrade their technical skills and knowledge by taking higher-level courses.
